Job Details:

Purpose:

The Associate Director for Student Governance Organizations plays a pivotal role in creating a culture of empowered ownership among student leaders on campus. This position provides advising and support for Student Government, the largest student organization at UT Austin and the voice of students for the administration, and Senate of College Councils, which serves as a key partner for student input to the Provost Office and academic units on campus. Within the Leadership portfolio, SG and Senate serve as the flagship, exemplar leadership opportunities for students, and this position is key to providing an environment and the skills to develop strong leadership on campus.

Additionally, this position works with the Executive Director of Leadership Initiatives to integrate civil discourse initiatives, leadership competencies, and career skill development into the training, advising, and administration of student governance organizations at UT Austin. As a part of the Student Leadership portfolio in the Office of the Dean of Students, this position also supports wide-ranging campus engagement and leadership opportunities for all students.


Duties:

Advise Student Government (SG), including leadership development and training, risk management, budgeting, organizational transitions, legal and policy alignment and review, and best practices.

  • Advise Senate of College Councils, including leadership development and training, risk management, budgeting, organizational transitions, legal and policy alignment and review, academic partnerships, and best practices.
  • Nurture and maintain an environment of proactive communication on major issues with the Director and DOS Lead Team. Provide ongoing updates on legislation, media content, and student leader dynamics. Coach and develop active ownership and student body leadership in student governance members.
  • Oversee campus-wide elections, including Student Government, Graduate Student Assembly, Senate of College Councils, The Daily Texan, Texas Union, and the Co-op.
  • Support campus leadership initiatives by coordinating the implementation of leadership initiatives and the civil discourse campaign into student governance organizations. Represent DOS and Student Affairs on university and departmental committees. Collaborate with DOS and campus partners on large-scale events and programmatic efforts
  • Serve as a resource and contact for sponsored student organizations, including responding to requests for information, managing the SGO advisor email account, providing administrative support for high-level meetings and appointments, documenting internal procedures, and coordinating with the Director of Business Operations to oversee the SG and Senate budgets. Maintain confidentiality. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualification:

Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, or a related field. At least 4 years experience advising student governance organizations, training and developing student leaders, and implementing student programs. Experience managing a budget or advising on finances. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, administration, and external stakeholders. Possess effective facilitation skills, strong attention to detail, and have success managing concurrent tasks. Professional demeanor and ability to maintain sensitive information. Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills including presentations, written correspondence, and reports. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

At least 6 years of experience advising student organizations. Experience with student governance at a large, public institution. Demonstrated work with and understanding of reputational and financial risks. Knowledge of Robert’s Rules of Order. Experience with budget forecasting. Success in responding to media inquiries. Demonstrated strategic and innovative approaches to problem solving. Experience supervising professional and para-professional staff. Experience building partnerships and collaborating across departments. Leadership curriculum development.
