Job Summary:
Strategically lead forward in creating beloved community by implementing the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church’s vision of strong community connections and covenantal action. That vision requires leadership in increasing awareness, training, resourcing and connections for local churches to the ways and means needed to address local, national and international matters of mission and justice.
The individual in this role works closely with the Director of Connectional Ministries to provide sustainable, measurable growth in the areas of transformative change in communities advocating for justice and addressing iniquities. This is a highly collaborative role with both inter and intra departmental responsibility for leadership, vision, communication and planning.
Essential Functions:
- Work across the conference to cast a vision for local church development of community engagement as a significant and transformative ministry. Assist churches in recognizing their potential for impacting change in areas of mission, peace, and justice.
- Effectively collaborate to lead assigned committees to provide the Indiana Conference with tools and resources including but not limited to training, curriculum, webinars, and other resources that inspire insight and understanding to the local church and their community on matters of community engagement and social justice.
- Conduct site visits, engage in strategic conversations, and support collaborative initiatives with community partners and congregations for the purpose of increasing awareness and engagement.
- Support district superintendents and their missional strategy teams in identifying and addressing missional outreach needs within districts and congregations.
- Oversee the work and effectiveness of teams that relate to General Board of Global Ministries, UMVIM, Church and Society, Ministry Partners Network, Grants, Operation Classroom, Children Matter Most, Africa University, and other teams as identified with conference leadership.
- Oversee development of new grants and funding resources as well as current grant management for the purpose of equipping local churches to lead forward in this important work.
Requirements:
- Can lead by example through the ability to function as a team player with other ministry teams.
- Five proven years of experience in leadership roles.
- Passion for community partnership development with a strong interest to further develop expertise in this field.
- Ability to lead others using an inclusive leadership style and a commitment to equity while developing high performance teams.
- Understand and can implement both internal and external process improvements.
- Project management experience with multiple workstreams.
- Robust understanding of key United Methodist structure, concepts, and best practices.
- Understanding of systemic matters which impact change.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Relational understanding of leadership.
- Ability to delegate appropriately.
- Competency with modern communication and reporting technology.
Work Environment:
- Remote position with occasional meetings at the conference center in Indianapolis.
- Remote with frequent virtual meetings.
- Includes administrative support.
- Weekly travel within the state of Indiana.
- Some travel to jurisdictional or other denominational events.
- Conference provides computer, phone subsidy, mileage reimbursement and travel expenses.
