Amgen seeks an Associate Director, Commercial Data Science to define and execute the AI and Advanced Analytics strategy across Commercial units. You will lead data scientists and cross-functional teams to build scalable AI products and enterprise analytics, shaping strategy, portfolio priorities, and adoption across the organization.
The role is flexible commuter to Thousand Oaks, with on-site work at least two days per week.

In this vital role the Associate Director, Commercial Data Science is responsible for defining and executing the Commercial AI and Advanced Analytics strategy across Amgen's Commercial Business Units. This leader partners with senior commercial, marketing, medical, digital, and technology stakeholders to identify high-value business opportunities where AI and data science can create measurable impact.
Rather than serving as an individual contributor, the Associate Director leads teams of data scientists and cross-functional partners to develop scalable AI/ML products and enterprise analytics capabilities that improve commercial performance and ultimately help patients receive the therapies they need.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Commercial Data Science, this individual will drive strategy, portfolio prioritization, organizational capability, and business adoption across the Commercial organization.
Flexible Commuter role to Thousand Oaks, CA office. You will work on-site a minimum of 2 days a week.
- Execute on the Commercial AI and Advanced Analytics roadmap aligned with brand and enterprise priorities.
- Partner with Commercial leadership to identify high-value opportunities where AI and advanced analytics can accelerate growth, improve customer engagement, and enhance decision making.
- Prioritize the Commercial AI/ML portfolio based on business value, strategic alignment, organizational readiness, and expected return on investment.
- Translate evolving business challenges into scalable capabilities and data products.
- Lead a portfolio of AI, Machine Learning, Generative AI, and advanced analytics initiatives from business strategy through deployment and organizational adoption.
- Provide technical oversight for predictive modeling, customer targeting, next-best-action, causal inference, optimization, Generative AI, and other advanced analytical capabilities.
- Guide technical teams in the development of production-grade AI products while ensuring scalability, maintainability, and business impact.
- Partner with Data Engineering, Digital Technology, and external vendors to operationalize enterprise AI capabilities.
- Build trusted partnerships with Brand, Marketing, Sales, Medical, Market Access, and Digital leaders.
- Communicate complex analytical concepts to executive audiences in a clear, compelling, and business-focused manner.
- Influence investment decisions by developing business cases, success metrics, and ROI assessments for AI initiatives.
- Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team of data scientists while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, continuous learning, and business partnership.
- Establish technical standards, best practices, and governance for Commercial Data Science.
- Champion responsible AI principles, model governance, and ethical AI practices across Commercial.
- Build organizational capability by mentoring future leaders and developing technical talent.
- Continuously evaluate emerging AI technologies, industry trends, and external innovations to identify opportunities that create competitive advantage.
- Represent Commercial Data Science across enterprise initiatives and external collaborations.
- Foster experimentation while ensuring successful transition from proof-of-concept to enterprise-scale deployment.

- Doctorate degree and 3 years of experience in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, business administration or a quantitative field
- OR
- Masters degree and 7 years of experience in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, business administration or a quantitative field
- OR
- Bachelors degree and 9 years of experience in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, business administration or a quantitative field
- OR
- Associates degree and 12 years of experience in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, business administration or a quantitative field
- OR
- High school diploma / GED and 14 years of experience in statistics, operations research, mathematics, econometrics, business administration or a quantitative field
In addition to meeting at least one of the above requirements, you must have a minimum of 3 years experience directly managing people and/or leadership experience leading teams, projects, programs, or directing the allocation or resources. Your managerial experience may run concurrently with the required technical experience referenced above.
- 5+ years leading cross-functional AI, analytics, or data science initiatives that delivered measurable business outcomes.
- 3+ years of people leadership experience, including coaching and developing technical talent.
- Demonstrated success influencing executive stakeholders and driving organizational change.
- Deep understanding of AI, Machine Learning, Generative AI, optimization, causal inference, and modern data science methodologies.
- Experience developing enterprise AI strategies and managing portfolios of analytical products.
- Proven ability to translate business priorities into scalable analytical solutions.
- Bio/Pharmaceutical commercial experience strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting Commercial strategy, omnichannel engagement, customer targeting, market access, patient analytics, or field effectiveness.
- Strong understanding of healthcare data including claims, specialty pharmacy, EMR, and commercial datasets.
- Experience providing technical direction for cloud-based AI platforms including Databricks, AWS, Azure, or similar technologies.
- Strong understanding of MLOps, AI product lifecycle management, model governance, and production deployment.
- Previous hands-on programming experience in Python, R, Scala, Java, or similar languages with the ability to guide technical solution design rather than serve as the primary developer.
- Strong presence with the ability to simplify complex analytical concepts into strategic business recommendations.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across diverse stakeholder groups.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
