Job summary

Rittal LLC in Urbana, Ohio is seeking an Associate Design Engineer to contribute to the design and validation of industrial enclosures, racks, and related systems.

You will provide technical oversight for safety items, maintain design baselines, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support certification, manufacturing readiness, and continuous improvement initiatives across local and global products.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree preferred in Mechanical Engineering Technology.
  • 1–3 years of product design experience preferred.
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication and assembly is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools and engineering software.
  • Familiarity with UL, CE, NEC, VDE, and performance standards (NEMA, IEC, ANSI).

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight of critical safety items and approved sources, ensuring continued certification compliance.
  • Maintain design configuration baselines for fielded systems and support certification standards.
  • Perform engineering evaluations to resolve design-related production issues and support alternate component qualification.
  • Conduct evaluations to identify cost reduction opportunities and support product optimization.
  • Participate in the change control process to assess, approve, and implement changes to local and global products.
  • Collaborate with Quality teams to identify, correct, and prevent product reliability issues.
  • Lead or contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on speed, cost, quality, and productivity.
  • Engage with cross-functional teams to support product lifecycle and manufacturing readiness.

Primary Activities/Duties

Requirements

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with engineering change control processes and product lifecycle management.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools and engineering software.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of product design experience, ideally in sheet metal fabrication and assembly.
  • Experience with MIG/TIG welding, powder coat, e-coat, and other metal finishing processes is a plus.
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards such as UL, CE, NEC, VDE, and performance measures like NEMA, IEC, ANSI.
  • Proficiency in 3D and 2D CAD tools such as ProEngineer Creo 3.0 and AutoCAD Inventor.
  • Eagerness to learn, grow, and contribute to a collaborative engineering team.
