What you will be doing

As an Associate Cybersecurity Analyst, you’ll be on the front lines of defense, working with a highly motivated team focused on analyzing, developing, and delivering solutions to stop adversaries. You will be responsible for diligently working on alerts from various defensive security systems/tools (e.g., IDS alerts, firewall, and network logs) to analyze and determine if the alerts represent a threat.

This is an on-site position working out of the DOT Security - Security Operations Center in Mettawa, IL.

Responsibilities

1. Monitor and analyze real-time alerts from our SIEM and other security tools to determine possible causes.
2. Evaluate and investigate network traffic, interpret logs, and analyze packet captures.
3. Provide timely detection, investigation, and alerting of potential attacks/intrusions, anomalies, and misuse activities, distinguishing these from benign activities.
4. Document investigation and analysis actions to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
5. Evaluate and escalate events based on established procedures and playbooks.
6. Perform event correlation to gain situational awareness and assess attack effectiveness.
7. Investigate phishing emails.

What We Are Looking For

• Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills for non-technical stakeholders.
• Knowledge of current threats and vulnerabilities.
• Familiarity with the MITRE ATT&CK framework.
• Understanding of IT security principles and methods (firewalls, VPNs, encryption).
• Knowledge of network traffic flows (TCP/IP, OSI model, ITIL).
• Understanding of authentication, authorization, and access control.
• Knowledge of defense-in-depth principles and network architecture.
• Knowledge of network protocols and services (DNS, DHCP, directory services).
• Knowledge of Windows/Unix ports and services.

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, IT, or Cybersecurity (relevant work experience can substitute for degrees).
• Or a Master’s degree or four years of relevant work experience.
