Job summary

A healthcare provider focused on addiction recovery is seeking an Associate Counselor in Newport News, Virginia. In this role, you will work under the supervision of licensed counselors, conducting individual and group sessions for patients. You will be responsible for assessing patient counseling needs, developing treatment plans, and ensuring continuity of care from admission to discharge. Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree specializing in psychology, counseling, or social work.
  • Associate, assistant, or resident level of licensure or certification in counseling.
  • One year experience in substance use, mental health, or related field.
  • Residents/supervisees may be credentialed as: Residents in Counseling; Residents in Social Work; CSAC; CSAC Supervisee; Resident in MFT.

Responsibilities

  • Interface with the clinical team regarding patient treatment.
  • Assess counseling needs and develop treatment plans.
  • Document all counseling and education services.
  • Obtain previous records relevant to the current treatment episode.
  • Prepare the substance abuse counseling portion of the patient treatment plan.
  • Provide substance abuse counseling services specified in the patient treatment plan.
  • Reassess patients and revise the substance use counseling portion of the patient treatment plan as necessary.
  • Develop the patient discharge/continuum of care plan to ensure movement to appropriate levels of care.
  • Participate fully as a member of a multidisciplinary team for assigned patients.
  • Facilitate intervention for crisis-orientated issues utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach for assigned patients.
  • Document all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals, and follow-up in the patient’s clinical record.
  • Maintain patient caseload (including all case management and utilization review updates, treatment planning duties, and clinical charting as required).
  • Provide coordination of support services for the patient and their family and record the services provided in the clinical record.
  • Facilitate family therapy as assigned.
  • Contact and coordinate with referral sources (i.e., legal, school, employer, etc.).
  • Carry out administrative and clinical functions as requested.
  • Attend team meetings and complete all training courses timely as required.
  • Other duties as assigned

Associate Counselor (DR&A and PHP)

As an Associate Counselor, you are under the supervision of a licensed counselor within their discipline and are actively working to complete state-specific requirements for credentialing purposes in pursuit of full independent certification and/or licensure or are working to maintain current certification, where applicable. You will oversee aspects of a patient’s treatment with appropriate scope of practice, including coordination and continuity of care from admission through discharge and follow-up, while promoting performance improvement and service delivery by conducting individual and group sessions directed towards addressing the causes and effects of the patient’s addiction.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's or master's degree specializing in psychology, counseling, or social work from an accredited college or university as may be required by the state in which the facility operates
  • Associate, assistant, or resident level of licensure or certification in counseling, social work, or addiction, as may be required by the state in which the facility operates
  • One (1) year experience in substance use, mental health, or related field
  • Residents/supervisees may be credentialed as any of the following:
    • Residents in Counseling
    • Residents in Social Work
    • Supervisee in Clinical Social Work
    • CSAC
    • CSAC Supervisee
