Job summary

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is seeking engineers and software developers to design, develop, test, and maintain software used on Navy submarines and aircraft carriers. You will help replace the current operator aides with an extensible architecture and work on desktop and mobile designs to improve data quality and reduce operational overhead.

The role emphasizes collaboration, mentoring, and delivering first-time quality software within a safety-critical environment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a related technical, engineering or science field.
  • Experience with or knowledge of C#, Go, SQL, full-stack web technologies (React, TypeScript, HTML/CSS, REST), VS Code, Visual Studio, Docker, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Checkmarx, Android, Integrated Software Unit Testing, Postgres, and Oracle.
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities; able to follow directions and deliver high-quality code.

Responsibilities

Job Description

The Shipboard Engineering Applications I team is an inclusive team of engineers and software developers responsible for a wide range of software applications. We design, develop, test, and maintain software that is used onboard Navy submarines and aircraft carriers, in shipyards, and at NNL to support engineers in making informed data-based decisions. Our goal is to provide high-quality applications that decrease costs, simplify procedures, reduce overhead, and to improve the quality of life for our sailors.

As a member of the team, you would be supporting the creation of a new extensible architecture to replace our current suite of operator aides and data tools used by the nuclear fleet.

This improved software will:

  • Support desktop and mobile designs
  • Decrease the burden of the nuclear operators.
  • Improve the quality and timeliness of the data captured.
  • Reduce technical debt by modernizing the application.
Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field; or Masters degree from an accredited college or university in a related technical, engineering or science field.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience with or knowledge of C#, Go, SQL, full-stack web technologies (React, TypeScript, HTML/CSS, REST), VS Code, Visual Studio, Docker, Azure DevOps, GitHub, Checkmarx, Android, Integrated Software Unit Testing, Postgres, and Oracle
  • Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles
  • Basic understanding of programming concepts and object-oriented principles
  • Basic understand of software development lifecycles (SDLC)
  • Able to follow quality and coding standards; write clean, maintainable code
  • Able to effectively communicate and collaborate with a team, independently, in stand-up meetings, sprint planning sessions, code reviews, and lessons learned meetings.
  • Able to take direction and feedback from the team leads
  • Able develop creative and efficient solutions to complex problems
  • Able to learn best practices and improve technical skills through learning and adapting to new technologies.
  • A self-starter that is willing to learn and excel at the task at hand, driving the task to completion in a timely and efficient manner.

Pay Range

$63,900.00 - $97,800.00 annually

Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Annual salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
