Overview

The Associate Coding Specialist is responsible for day-to-day tasks related to applying appropriate diagnostic codes to ancillary and recurring outpatient encounters or data retrieval, analysis and claims processing while maintaining data integrity within the medical records and other facility systems, as well as the information exchanged between Sarasota Memorial Health Care System (SMHCS) and designated practice management facilities.

Responsibilities

Apply diagnostic codes to outpatient encounters, perform data retrieval and analysis, and process claims. Maintain data integrity within medical records and facility systems, and ensure accurate information exchange between SMHCS and designated practice management facilities.

Required Qualifications
  • Certification by American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) OR certification by American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) as a Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A) or must be obtained within one (1) year of hire/transfer.
  • Completion of basic introductory coding courses including ICD-CM and CPT/HCPCS coding, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, and pharmacology.
  • Minimum of one (1) year Health Information Management (HIM) experience (i.e., basic coding, data analysis, etc.) in a related office setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hospital outpatient coding experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, effective verbal and written communication, and ability to interact with different departments and practitioners.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office products, EHR software and Encoder systems; ability to perform clerical duties and repetitive, detailed tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, shift priorities, and demonstrate decision-making ability.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical and critical thinking skills, and understanding of healthcare documentation.
