Job summary

UPMC is seeking an Associate Clinical Exercise Physiologist to work primarily in outpatient settings, implementing treatment plans, guiding progressive ambulation and exercise training, and educating patients on disease states and risk factor modification.

The role includes evaluating patient progress, documenting sessions, and providing orientation and paperwork for the Employee Wellness Program at some sites. CPRS/Sr. CPRS guidance is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Experience with cardiac rehabilitation, exercise testing, or clinical exercise prescription preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular disease processes, exercise physiology principles, and risk factor modification.
  • Ability to monitor patients during exercise, recognize changes in patient status, and respond appropriately.
  • Strong patient education and communication skills.
  • Active membership in professional organization(s) and recent experience in Cardiac or Pulmonary Rehabilitation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the Co-Worker Feedback program if asked
  • Completes annual competencies as required by department
  • Provides adequate orientation, oversight, and assures completion of necessary paperwork for Employee Wellness Program participants
  • Prepares for and responds to emergencies in a manner consistent with department guidelines
  • Promotes effective communication and teamwork within the department, hospital, and with other health professionals
  • Assists with staff development, special projects and community programs upon manager's request
  • Conducts meetings, in-services and continuing education
  • Implements patient treatment plan established by CPRS or Sr. CPRS and monitors progress
  • Develops inpatient discharge plans
  • Utilizes clinical support staff to promote respect and teamwork
  • Modifies and documents treatment considering patient age and medical history

Job description

The Associate Clinical Exercise Physiologist works primarily in outpatient settings. Implements treatment plans including progressive ambulation, exercise equipment orientation and training, education on disease states, smoking cessation, recovery and risk factor modifications. Evaluates patient progress while implementing plan to improve functional capacity. Documents exercise session details, response and progression and educate according to established plan. At some sites provides orientation, oversight, and completion of necessary paper work for participants in the Employee Wellness Program.

Responsibilities

  • Upon request by Manager, assists with staff development, special projects and community programs
  • Conducts, organizes and participates in meetings, in-services and continuing education
  • Implementation of individualized patient treatment plan established by a CPRS or Sr. CPRS and monitoring of patient progress.
  • Develops inpatient discharge plans.
  • Utilizes clinical support staff in a manner that both verbally and non-verbally promotes respect, confidence and a team atmosphere.
  • Modification and documentation of treatment with accuracy and with respect to patient's age and medical history.
  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or related field.
  • Experience with cardiac rehabilitation, exercise testing, or clinical exercise prescription preferred.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular disease processes, exercise physiology principles, and risk factor modification.
  • Ability to monitor patients during exercise, recognize changes in patient status, and respond appropriately.
  • Strong patient education and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
  • BLS certification required; ACLS certification preferred or obtained within designated timeframe.
  • Active membership in professional organization(s) and recent experience in Cardiac or Pulmonary Rehabilitation preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

One of the following three certifications is also PREFERRED:

  • Active membership and American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
  • Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP) certification OR (b) American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
  • Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP) OR (c) American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR)
  • Certified Cardiac Rehabilitation Professional Certification (CCRP).
  • BLS or CPR REQUIRED based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 34
