Job summary

SI Group is seeking an Associate Chemist to join the Application Lab in Houston. You will perform complex chemical research and analytical testing with minimal supervision, contributing to new product development and test methods while supporting customers with technical solutions.

You will operate rheometers and other rubber-testing equipment, maintain records, ensure data integrity, and adhere to EH&S and quality standards.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or physical sciences with 2+ years industrial experience.
• Willingness to perform complex experiments and contribute to team effort.
• Experience in rubber and/or adhesives is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs complex experiments under minimal supervision.
• Supports internal and external customers with technical solutions and test methods.
• Maintains legible, neat, and organized laboratory records.
• Operates rubber testing instrumentation such as rheometers and other equipment.
• Maintains inventory of lab chemicals and ensures data integrity.
• Adheres to EH&S, Responsible Care, and ISO 9000 programs.

Job description

As the Associate Chemist, reporting to the Manager - Application Lab, Rubber, you will be responsible for performing complex laboratory operations with minimal supervision, applying critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to chemical research, analytical testing, and application development. You will recommend alternative or supporting approaches to address laboratory needs and contributes to the development of new products, procedures, and test methods. You will conducts analyses using analytical tools and applications, supports internal and external customers by providing technical solutions, and serves as a knowledgeable resource within the functional area.

How You Will Make an Impact:

• Performs complex experiments under minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work and contribute to a team environment.
• Issues reports in verbal and written formats in a timely fashion and at specified intervals.
• Handles multiple assignments and coordinates with others.
• Assists in the maintenance, calibration, and repair of laboratory equipment.
• Develops proficiency in communication skills within functional units.
• Able to independently operate the primary equipment in the application lab including basic troubleshooting and preventive maintenance skills.
• Knowledgeable in the operation of Internal mixers, two-roll mills and small-scale extruders.
• Is knowledgeable of hazardous/non-hazardous waste generation practices.
• Independently conducts simple and routine analytical qualitative and quantitative chemical and physical testing.
• Operate rubber testing instrumentation such as Rheometers, Physical testing equipment, DMA, etc.
• Evaluate materials for compliance with standards and specifications.
• Maintain and periodically review and revise inventory of rubber chemicals.
• Maintains legible, neat and organized laboratory records.
• Adhere to company EH&S regulations, SI Group Responsible Care practices and ISO 9000 programs
• Maintain a clean and safe laboratory and working environment.
• Works with supervision to ensure data integrity and verify that their work is correct.

• BS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science or any physical sciences with at least 2 years related industrial experience
• Experience in rubber and/or adhesives preferred
