Job description

Guía Legal Group | Miami, FL (remote considered. Must live within reach of an immigration court) | Full-Time

You have stood in front of an immigration judge, or you are ready to, and you would rather run a case than draft pieces of someone else's. We are looking for an attorney who wants a real docket and the responsibility that comes with it.

Guía Legal Group is a Miami immigration firm founded in 2017 by attorney Marlene Markowitz. We represent clients before USCIS, in ICE custody, and before the immigration courts, across affirmative and defensive matters: adjustment of status, family and marriage petitions, naturalization, U and T visas, asylum, cancellation of removal, and deportation defense. Most of our clients speak Spanish, and we serve them wherever they are.

What You Will Do

  • Own a caseload of affirmative immigration matters from intake through decision: adjustment of status, family-based and marriage petitions, naturalization, U and T visas, and related filings.

  • Appear in immigration court for master and individual calendar hearings, and represent clients at USCIS interviews.

  • Build and argue removal defense cases, including asylum and cancellation of removal, with direct access to the founding attorney while you build that experience.

  • Make strategy calls on your files and keep every matter moving without waiting to be asked.

  • Meet with clients and families in Spanish and English: explain their options, set honest expectations, and deliver difficult news when the facts require it.

  • Direct paralegals and case managers on your files: assign drafting, review evidence packets, and own the deadlines.

  • Travel to hearings and interviews outside your home area when a case requires it.

What We Are Looking For

Required

  • Active bar license in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction. (Federal immigration practice does not require Florida admission.)

  • Hands-on immigration experience that includes affirmative filings: as an attorney, or as an immigration paralegal before you were admitted.

  • Comfort in the courtroom. You prepare thoroughly, and you are not rattled by a judge, opposing counsel, or a hearing that changes direction.

  • Professional fluency in Spanish, spoken and written.

  • If remote: you live within commuting distance of an immigration court and can travel for appearances.

Preferred

  • Two or more years of immigration practice, including removal defense.

  • Litigation experience in another practice area (family law, criminal, or similar) combined with a genuine immigration background.

The families on your docket are deciding whether they get to stay together. We want the attorney who prepares every case like that is true.
