Job Overview:
A law firm seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented Associate Attorney with a strong passion for Elder Law, Estate Planning, and Probate & Administration. This role offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience working closely with partners on a wide range of legal matters, including estate litigation, Medicaid applications, and trust administration. The position is based in Brooklyn, NY, and requires regular court appearances across multiple boroughs/counties.
Duties:
Assist in client meetings to develop and finalize estate plans.
Draft legal documents, including wills, revocable and irrevocable trusts (such as Special Needs Trusts, Irrevocable Life Insurance Trusts, and Medicaid trusts), powers of attorney, healthcare proxies, and living wills.
Support partners and paralegals in preparing and submitting Medicaid applications for both community-based and nursing home care.
Manage all aspects of estate administration, from drafting petitions and marshaling assets to handling creditor claims and reviewing accountings.
Assist in estate litigation by drafting Surrogate’s Court petitions, discovery demands, responsive pleadings, and motions (e.g., default, preclusion, discovery, and summary judgment motions).
Prepare for and conduct 1404 and 2211 examinations, as well as trials in the Surrogate’s Court.
Represent clients in court appearances across various jurisdictions.
Requirements:
Admission to the New York State Bar or pending admission.
Strong analytical and legal research skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Detail-oriented, proactive, and highly organized with strong multitasking skills.
Education:
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Certifications:
Admission to the New York State Bar (or in the process of being admitted).
Skills:
Proficiency in legal research and drafting.
Familiarity with legal software, including HotDocs, Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, Excel, and Microsoft Teams.
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines efficiently.
