The ideal candidate has 3–5 years of civil litigation focused on general liability, strong negotiation and trial skills, and the ability to manage budgets and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Manage a full caseload of general liability matters from intake to resolution.
• Conduct investigations reviewing policies, medical records, accident reports, and evidence.
• Prepare pleadings, motions, discovery, and briefs for carriers and insureds.
• Plan discovery strategy: depositions, written discovery, and expert disclosures.
• Lead trial preparation and represent clients at trial, arbitration, and mediation.

General Liability (GL) Attorney

Salary: $110k - 145k/yr

Location: Pittsburgh, PA-Hybrid

Position Overview

We are seeking a seasoned General Liability (GL) Attorney to join our litigation team and manage a diverse caseload defending insureds in personal injury, premises liability, and related insurance matters. The GL Attorney will be responsible for all phases of litigation from intake through trial, arbitration, or resolution, providing strategic legal advice to carriers and clients, evaluating risk, and delivering strong courtroom and negotiation advocacy.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a full caseload of general liability matters including personal injury, premises liability, and related claims from intake through resolution.
• Conduct comprehensive case investigations including review and analysis of policies, medical records, accident reports, and other evidence.
• Prepare and respond to pleadings, motions, discovery requests, and legal briefs; draft legal memoranda and correspondence for carriers and insureds.
• Plan and execute discovery strategy: take and defend depositions, propound and respond to written discovery, and manage expert disclosure and reports.
• Lead trial preparation: develop trial strategy, prepare exhibits and witness outlines, coordinate with experts, and represent clients at trial, arbitration, and mediation.
• Advocate effectively in alternative dispute resolution forums including arbitration and mediation to achieve favorable outcomes.
• Negotiate settlements with opposing counsel while protecting insurer interests and minimizing exposure; document and communicate settlement recommendations.
• Provide risk assessment and coverage analysis to claims teams; advise on reservation of rights, coverage defenses, and litigation strategy.
• Maintain thorough case files and matter budgets, track deadlines and statute of limitations, and ensure timely compliance with court procedures and local rules.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with carriers, insured clients, claim handlers, co-counsel, and outside vendors; supervise/paralegal staff as needed.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active admission to practice in the hiring state(s).
• Minimum 3-5 years of civil litigation experience with a strong focus on general liability and insurance defense; candidates with 5+ years and demonstrated trial experience preferred.
• Proven courtroom experience including trial preparation and in-court advocacy; experience in arbitration and mediation required.
• Demonstrated knowledge of insurance law, coverage issues, and defense strategies in personal injury cases.
• Strong litigation skills: discovery, motions practice, depositions, legal research, and persuasive legal writing.
• Excellent negotiation skills and a track record of resolving claims favorably for insurers or clients.
• Proficiency in case management, docketing, and legal technology (document management, e-discovery tools, and calendaring systems).
• Effective client representation and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal issues to non-lawyers and make strategic recommendations.
• Ability to evaluate and articulate risk exposure, manage budgets, and adhere to billing and matter management expectations.
• High professional integrity, attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to travel to courts, mediations, and depositions as required.
