Job description

Associate Attorney – Civil Litigation (Construction Defect / PI / Coverage)

We’re partnering with a long‑established California civil litigation firm to help them hire an Associate Attorney to join their defense‑side team, focusing on construction defect, personal injury, and insurance coverage work.

This is an excellent opportunity for a mid‑level litigator who wants sophisticated cases, trial exposure, and real client impact—without big‑law burnout.

Highlights
  • Reputation & Quality Work: AV‑rated, “go‑to” defense firm for major corporate and institutional clients, with a track record of trial wins and high‑profile defense verdicts.
  • Meaningful Trial & Litigation Experience: Work side‑by‑side with trial‑tested partners on complex, high‑value cases—this is not a back‑office role.
  • Balance vs Big Law: Serious cases and clients, but more sustainable expectations than many AmLaw environments.
  • Growth & Development: Real mentoring, room to develop your own niche, and opportunities to build relationships with sophisticated clients.
The Opportunity

You’ll join a highly respected trial firm that has spent 30+ years defending complex, high‑exposure cases for major corporations, public entities, and insurers across California. Matters include:

  • Construction defect and construction‑related litigation
  • Catastrophic and complex personal injury defense
  • Insurance coverage and related disputes

You will be part of a tight‑knit, collaborative team handling cases from early investigation through trial and appeal.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage a busy, varied defense docket in construction defect, PI, and/or coverage
  • Draft and argue motions, manage discovery, and take/defend depositions
  • Participate in mediations, arbitrations, and trial preparation
  • Collaborate closely with partners who are seasoned trial lawyers (100+ jury trials collectively)
  • Work with sophisticated clients (including Fortune 500‑type entities and major institutions) on high‑stakes matters
Location & Working Style
  • San Francisco / Bay Area: office available for those who prefer to be in‑person
  • LA or elsewhere in CA: fully remote is an option; the firm has a meaningful LA‑area caseload and values having attorneys on the ground there
  • Target 1,850 billable hours per year
Compensation
  • Base salary: approx. $125,000–$185,000, depending on experience
  • Hourly bonus: $100/hour for all hours above 1,850
  • Year‑end discretionary bonus based on performance
  • Origination incentives for bringing in work
  • Comprehensive health and dental
  • 401(k) with ~10% firm contribution after one year (no employee match required)
