Job description

Title: Associate Athletic Trainer

Position Type: Staff Full-Time

Hours Per Week: 40

Position Summary

The Associate Athletic Trainer functions as a member of the Elon Sports Medicine Staff that is responsible for the day-to-day administration of healthcare, under the direction of the Team Physician and the Assistant AD for Sports Medicine, for Elon University student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics. The Associate Athletic Trainer monitors the day-to-day activity in one of the three athletic training rooms to ensure all modalities and equipment are functioning and assists the Assistant AD of Sports Medicine in the mentorship of Assistant Athletic Trainers. The Associate Athletic Trainer provides injury/illness prevention, immediate care, examination, assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention for student-athletes participating in the intercollegiate athletics program and enforces health care policies and procedures regarding medical insurance, physical examinations, and related activities for student-athletes. The Associate Athletic Trainer follows risk management processes and communicates with parents, coaches, health care professionals, administrators, faculty, and student-athletes. This position would work directly with the baseball program.

Minimum Required Education and Experience

Master's degree in Athletic Training, passing the national certification exam, and eligibility for state licensure in Athletic Training with a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience; 5 years of experience in athletic training at the intercollegiate level is strongly preferred. Athletic Training experience in a NCAA Division I level program is preferred. National Athletic Trainers Association license is required.

Job Duties

  • Provide healthcare for assigned teams/student-athletes within the Department of Athletics by attending competitions and practices, including traveling with teams to away competitions, through injury/illness prevention and immediate care, examination, assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention of all athletic-related injuries.
  • Rehabilitation of student-athletes' athletic-related injuries to return to sport participation, including assessing the nature of their injuries, their range of motion, strength, and other physical parameters, making referrals to physicians as appropriate, enforcing the prescribed treatment protocols of physicians, and using all appropriate therapeutic modalities and exercises for evaluating their rehabilitative progress.
  • Administrative responsibilities for assigned sports teams including but not limited to; collection of insurance, demographic information, medical histories, scheduling pre-participation physicals prior to the start of any athletic activity, documentation of athletic injuries and rehabilitation sessions, healthcare referrals including scheduling appointments with primary care, orthopedic team physicians or other healthcare providers, scheduling diagnostic images such as X-rays, MRIs, etc., when ordered by team physicians, and communication on student-athletes' participation and health status to athletic coaches, administrators, team physicians, academic support, strength and conditioning staff, and parents when appropriate.
  • Administrative responsibility for the sports medicine department that may include overseeing the day-to-day operating activities of one of the three athletic training rooms, ordering supplies, recording inventory, maintaining primary care or orthopedic physician schedules, maintaining physical therapy schedules, assisting with Athletic Department drug testing, communication with secondary insurance providers, monitoring athletic department coaches and administrator CPR/AED certification requirements, and updating assigned teams' athletic coaches and student-athletes on NCAA recommendations on health and safety.
  • Other duties as assigned by the athletic department such as coverage of non-championship home competitions, hosting CAA championship events, and assisting in other athletic department functions.
  • Maintains individual professional competence and continuing education as required by North Carolina state licensure, the national Board of Certification, and National Athletic Trainers Association through professional development, attending professional development seminars, workshops and related activities, reading literature published in professional journals and texts, assuring compliance with federal (HIPAA, FERPA), state, and NCAA guidelines, and sharing the information gathered from these professional activities with other staff professionals and student-athletes.
