Tosoh Bioscience LLC is a major supplier of chromatography products to the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and chemical industries. Our product line includes:TSKgel, TOYOPEARL, and Ca++Pure-HA bulk media, TSKgel U/HPLC columns, process development products, dedicated systems for GPC analysis, and the LenS3 MALS detector. We have optimal solutions for biological research, drug discovery, medicinal chemistry, agriculture, manufacturing, or other industrial applications.

Summary

The Associate Applications Scientist is responsible for performing reliable and robust Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) methods to improve the separation and characterization of various polymers (plastics, rubber), biopolymers (starch, cellulose), and proteins from Tosoh’s internal R&D team and submitted by our customers. The person in this role must understand GPC instrumentation and methods necessary for the analysis of polymer chemistry products. This is a technical position requiring experimental skills to develop and demonstrate Tosoh Bioscience’s GPC instruments, columns, and detectors.

The person in this role performs the job under supervision of an established laboratory scientist. The job also requires communication in a positive and productive manner with other Applications team members. The Applications Development Manager will provide direct management and supervision. This Associate Application Scientist position has no supervisory responsibilities although occasional mentoring of interns is expected.

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports to the Applications Development Manager.

Major Duties And Responsibilities

GPC Experiments and Applications Development

  • Acquire an understanding of the laboratory instruments, detectors and associated chromatography columns manufactured and sold by Tosoh Bioscience. This includes primarily the principles of size exclusion chromatography also known as Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) for its operation in the commonly used applications in chemical and petrochemical industries as well as in biopharma.
  • Support Sales team by analyzing customer samples in a timely manner. Under direct supervision and with guidance of established laboratory scientist, performs method development on various customer samples.
  • Other duties as required

Generate and Present Technical Documentation

  • Support Product Management, Marketing/Communications and Sales teams by providing laboratory data for application notes, technical reports, white papers, and peer-reviewed scientific articles.
  • Support marketing and sales by participating in trade shows, seminars, and other technical symposia.
  • Conduct literature searches and plan further experiments to support Tosoh products.
  • Deliver projects and corresponding deliverables internally and to customers according to deadlines and keep Applications Group Manager updated regarding progress.
  • Remain current on industry trends and innovations related to analytical chromatography methods and columns.
  • Adhere to applications project plans, timelines, and deliverables, as well as customer sample timelines and deliverables.
  • Strictly adhere to laboratory safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Uphold and adhere to the Tosoh Bioscience culture and guiding principles.
  • Under direct supervision of an established laboratory scientist, use sound statistical methodology to execute GPC experiments (EcoSEC, high temperature EcoSEC GPC instruments) and analyze advanced multi-detector data including LenS3 multi-angle light scattering (MALS), viscometry, and refractive index (RI) detector.

Education

  • Preferred Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Chemistry, Biomaterial Science, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Skills And Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of practical experience with analytical chemistry, preferably on gel permeation chromatography with advanced detection methods.
  • A minimum of one year’s experience with polymer separation and characterization is required.
  • Wide understanding of chemistry and structure of different synthetic polymers and biomacromolecules is essential for successful accomplishment of the work.
  • Knowledge of gel permeation chromatography theory, instrumentation, and analysis software.
  • Must be highly motivated, very well organized, and able to effectively participate in daily operations of the laboratory. Although this position has no continuous supervisory responsibility, occasional mentoring of co-ops/interns is expected.
  • Ability to carry out basic maintenance and troubleshooting of gel permeation chromatography instruments.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are required, as well as the ability to interact with colleagues and customers at all levels.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel occasionally (~10%), primarily domestically.
