Job summary

Dominion Energy is recruiting for a Transmission System Operator role in Virginia. This position performs real-time actions to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System under direct supervision.

You will monitor SCADA, issue switching orders, and provide clear communications during disturbances and weather events. Qualifications include 0-3 years in electrical/mechanical utility settings, beginner-level skills in Microsoft Office, and a basic understanding of safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • 0-3 years of related electrical or mechanical experience in a utility, industrial, or production environment. (Note : A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A master's degree can count as one year experience)
  • Beginner - level skills: Computer systems (Microsoft Office), Verbal and written communications, Interpersonal, Complex problem - solving, Teamwork and collaboration.
  • Abilities: Critical thinking, Attention to detail, Effectiveness in high stress situations, Personable, flexible, and dependable. This position requires you to operate a Dominion Energy vehicle or operate a vehicle on Dominion Energy's behalf. In this role you will be expected to report and respond to emergency storm related events. The work schedule for this position requires you to work 12 hour rotating shifts.
  • Preferred: Beginner-level knowledge of NERC and PJM regulations, Electrical principles, Electrical control systems, Substation equipment and operations, Power station operations and generation.

Responsibilities

  • Take and direct timely real-time actions to maintain Bulk Electric System reliability.
  • Monitor and respond to status changes and emergencies.
  • Provide switching instructions and ensure safe zones for personnel and equipment.
  • Operate SCADA to control transmission and distribution equipment.
  • Log system activities and communicate with internal/external stakeholders.

Job Summary

This role works under direct supervision to take and/or direct timely and appropriate real-time actions to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System, during both normal and emergency conditions. Critical, reliability - related tasks are performed under the direct, continuous supervision and observation of a Transmission System Operator, Senior Transmission System Operator, or Supervisor-Electric Transmission Operations. Monitors elements of the bulk electric system and responds to status changes. Responds to disturbances, emergency events and other changes in weather or system conditions and makes the appropriate internal and external notifications . Monitors voltage and reactive power flows and utilizes reactive resources to maintain voltage schedules. Prepares switching orders that will isolate work areas and provides a safe zone of protection for both field personnel and equipment. Provides verbal instructions to field personnel engaged in switching operations and makes the appropriate internal and external notifications. Controls transmission and distribution equipment using Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) as needed. Monitors and regulates the flow of power among interconnected entities . Logs system activities for routine reporting to ensure the accuracy of operational records.

Required:

0-3 years of related electrical or mechanical experience in a utility, industrial, or production environment . Preferred:

Beginner-level knowledge of NERC and PJM regulations, Electrical principles (flow of electricity, magnetism, inductance, capacitance, direct and alternating currents, etc.), Electrical control systems (electrical controls and motors, motor controls and starters, relays, overloads, control circuits, etc.), Substation equipment and operations, Power station operations and generation.

Education Requirements

Education Level: Degree or an equivalent combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be accepted in lieu of preferred level of education: Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, etc.)

Disciplines: Electrical, Industrial or Mechanical Technology is preferred

OR

Associate’s degree in a technical discipline (Electrical, Mechanical. Industrial, etc.) AND 2 years of related experience

OR

4+ years of related experience

December 2026 graduates may be considered for this position

Licenses, Certifications, or Quals Description

Must obtain NERC Certification (Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator) and PJM Certification (Transmission System Operator) within 6 months of start/transfer date . No more than 4 total test attempts are permitted to obtain both NERC and PJM certifications. Must complete the Dominion Energy System Operations defined Operator qualification program within 18 months of initial start/transfer date.

This job requires the ability to report to work in no more than 60 minutes under normal driving and traffic conditions.

Expected Hiring Base Salary Range:

$73200 - $95000

The expected hiring base salary range is the range we anticipate hiring within for this position. The actual salary offered may vary based on factors such as the selected candidate’s qualifications, skills, experience, and work location.
