Associate Principal Engineer - Physical Substations

United States (Remote)

Salary Range: $50,000 - $88,000/year

Based on the Denver, Colorado labor market.

Position Scope: This role is designed to support our team on a temporary basis, with an anticipated duration of 4-8 months. The expected schedule is part-time, averaging approximately 25 hours per week.

This position is not eligible for benefits and does not guarantee long-term employment, but it offers a great chance to be part of a high-impact, mission-driven team at NEI.

Location: Lakewood, CO (local/in-office) or full-time remote candidates.

Role Overview:

As an Associate Principal Engineer - Physical in the Renewable Department, you will serve as an internal Technical Consultant and be responsible for performing and reviewing physical engineering design and analysis. You will be responsible for supporting client projects and providing a quality deliverable that is on time and within the defined budget.

  • Partner with Technical Directors and the Vice President, acting as a physical engineering subject matter expert on the most complex projects within the Renewables department.
  • Perform high-level quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) reviews as the final quality check before project release, identifying critical errors and potential issues.
  • Act as a consulting expert, understanding and anticipating client needs to provide tailored solutions in physical design and project execution.
  • Ensure that NEI’s QA/QC procedures are followed and that the teams are given appropriate feedback and coaching to meet NEI’s quality expectations.
  • Address and resolve intricate technical problems in physical design, ensuring solutions are creative, constructable, and economically feasible.
  • Assist with the creation and enforcement of technical standards across the department.
  • Assist design teams as a senior mentor, ensuring project execution is completed on time, within budget, and meets all specifications.
  • Identify and implement improvements for division processes, tools, and technology to optimize efficiency and quality.
  • Maintain a strong understanding and comprehension of applicable Codes and Standards.
  • Attend conferences, training workshops, seminars, undergraduate, and graduate classes as appropriate for advancement and as required to maintain quality of work.
  • Attend safety training and follow safety rules and guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Education: Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: 7+ years direct physical engineering & design experience.
  • Licensure: Professional Engineering License (PE) or ability to obtain one within one year.
  • Expert Knowledge: Substation electrical clearances, BESS equipment layouts, conduit design, illumination plans, one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, substation physical layouts, section & elevations, bus configurations, bill of materials, equipment specifications, grounding and conduit plans and details, proposal development, project scheduling, and all aspects of HV and EHV substation physical engineering.
  • Experience: Adhering to National Electrical Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), IEEE codes and standards, and relevant county, city, and state regulations.
  • Skills: Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, MathCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Abilities: Effective written and oral communications skills. Good interpersonal skills.

Note: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting and some field work may be required.

Travel: Typical: 5 – 15%
