Job summary

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY PRACTITIONER

The Assistive Technology Practitioner is responsible for evaluating, recommending, configuring, implementing, and supporting assistive technology solutions for employees with disabilities in workplace environments. This position works directly with employees and organizational stakeholders to identify technology solutions that improve accessibility, independence, productivity, and successful job performance.

The practitioner will provide expertise across a broad range of assistive technologies and ensure solutions are compatible with enterprise systems, workplace applications, and accessibility requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

1. Assistive Technology Assessment & Solutions:

  • Conduct comprehensive assistive technology assessments based on employee functional needs and essential job functions.
  • Identify and recommend appropriate assistive technology hardware, software, and adaptive equipment.
  • Configure, implement, and validate assistive technology solutions.
  • Evaluate emerging assistive technologies and accessibility tools for potential workplace adoption.
  • Assess the effectiveness of implemented solutions and recommend adjustments when necessary.

2. Assistive Technology Expertise & Accessibility:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of screen readers including JAWS, NVDA, and VoiceOver; screen magnification; speech recognition; alternative input devices; refreshable braille displays; captioning; and communication technologies.
  • Assess compatibility of assistive technologies with Microsoft Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Microsoft 365, enterprise software, web applications, and mobile devices.
  • Conduct accessibility and usability testing of software, websites, electronic documents, and mobile applications using manual and automated testing methods.
  • Apply accessibility standards and requirements, including Section 508, WCAG, ADA, and Section 504.

3. Training & Technical Support:

  • Train employees on the effective use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
  • Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting for assistive technology solutions.
  • Explain technical concepts and recommendations clearly to employees and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Deliver assistive technology training, coaching, and accessibility awareness sessions.

4. Collaboration & Consultation:

  • Collaborate with employees, supervisors, Human Resources, IT, Disability/Reasonable Accommodation offices, medical providers, and rehabilitation professionals.
  • Advise organizational stakeholders on assistive technology, accessibility, inclusive workplace practices, and technology-related accommodations.
  • Support technology evaluations and accessibility considerations associated with organizational procurement.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role:

  • Demonstrated professional experience conducting assistive technology assessments and implementing workplace AT solutions.
  • Advanced knowledge of assistive technologies supporting individuals with visual, hearing, mobility, cognitive, learning, speech, and neurological disabilities.
  • Strong knowledge of ADA, Section 504, Section 508, WCAG, and applicable disability employment and accessibility requirements.
  • Experience testing assistive technology compatibility with enterprise technology environments.
  • Experience conducting accessibility and usability testing.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience delivering assistive technology training and user support.
  • Ability to manage multiple assessments and competing priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidential employee, disability, and medical information.
  • Ability to remain current with emerging assistive technology products, accessibility standards, and workplace technologies.

Preferred skills include:

  • Job Accommodation Network (JAN) guidance and accommodation best practices.
  • Rehabilitation engineering principles.
  • Ergonomics and human factors.
  • Universal Design and Inclusive Design.
  • Procurement accessibility requirements and technology evaluations.
  • Experience supporting federal or other large organizational environments.

Preferred certifications include:

  • RESNA Assistive Technology Professional (ATP).
  • Assistive Technology Applications Certificate Program (ATACP) or equivalent.
  • Certified Professional in Accessibility Core Competencies (CPACC).
  • Certified Ergonomic Assessment Specialist or comparable credential.
