Job summary

School City of Hammond is seeking a Special Education Assistive Technology Specialist to drive AT/AAC assessment, implementation, and coaching across early childhood to secondary levels. You will collaborate with SLPs, OTs, PTs, teachers, parents, and providers to align AT with IEP goals and district initiatives.

Responsibilities include training, program development, and managing AT inventory while promoting UDL across classrooms and ensuring access to communication for students 3–22 years old.

Qualifications

  • Must meet one of the education focus options and possess Indiana licensure.
  • Minimum three years of special education experience required.
  • Experience with AT/AAC tools and IEP documentation is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct team-based AT evaluations and data-driven feature matching to recommend communication devices and tools
  • Assist school teams in selecting and organizing AT tools across low-, mid-, and high-tech continuum, including vocabulary/communication systems and instructional software
  • Design and deliver training and professional development for staff, students, and families
  • Coach teams on communication strategies and document AT within the IEP
  • Serve as a transdisciplinary team member with SLPs, OTs, PTs, teachers, parents, and private providers
  • Support IEP teams with AT documentation at case conferences
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles to classroom environments
  • Identify AT resources and consult with families on funding options like grants and insurance
  • Manage the district's AT device inventory (trials, inventory, training, return/exit procedures)
  • Serve as security manager for district AT/AAC software accounts and coordinate with representatives
  • Collect and review AT outcome data and improve district AT procedures, forms, and guidelines
  • Act as the primary district contact for AT
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education

Special Education Focus: Bachelor's/Master's in Education with Indiana license & Mild Intervention or MI/MO/ED/SLD
SLP Focus: Master's in Speech-Language Pathology with IDOE SLP license, IPLA, CCC or ASHA CFY
SLPA Focus: Associate's or Bachelor's in SLPA/Communication Disorders with Indiana licensure & IPLA
Minimum three years of special education experience
