Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach – The College of Wooster

Summary:

The assistant coach will support the head coach in the coaching duties of the NCAA D-III Women’s Basketball program in accordance and compliance with NCAA, North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) and The College of Wooster policies and regulations. The assistant coach will also participate in all aspects of recruitment, training and development of student-athletes, retention, and the total organization and administration of the program, as assigned.

Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in planning, development, and direction of all team training and conditioning activities at a level that will improve the Women’s Basketball program’s position of competitive leadership in the North Coast Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III.
  • Assists in preparation and implementation of scouting reports, game film, film breakdown, and film exchange.
  • Assists in developing a recruitment strategy for prospective student athletes, informing prospects of academic programs, talent evaluations, coordinating mailings, telephone calls and text messages, and email exchanges.
  • Collaborates with Admissions on recruitment goals and supports retention efforts through partnerships with Student Affairs, the Academic Resource Center, and other departments.
  • Assists in administrative operations including budget management, coordinating team travel, room reservations, and meals, and ordering equipment and supplies.
  • Supports the development of a strong alumni and parent support system.
  • Assists in developing a strong social media platform with Facebook, X, and Instagram.
  • Serves as an active member of the athletic department’s team, responsible for providing leadership, goals, and program implementation to our nearly 2,000 undergraduate students.
  • Develops and maintains mutually supportive and collaborative working relationships with student affairs colleagues, faculty, and other campus partners to accomplish shared objectives and tasks.
  • Leads and assists with designated departmental, divisional, and/or College committees, initiatives and processes.
  • Develops meaningful connections with students, staff and faculty by being available and visible on campus.
  • Engages team members in service activities both on campus and in the surrounding community.
  • All coaches may be assigned additional duties in the area of facility and game management and teaching.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university.
  • One to two years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the sport, and sport specific certification, as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of NCAA regulations and guidelines governing the recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification is required (and can be completed after hire).
  • The ability to obtain College driver certification is desirable.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively and professionally with students, faculty and staff, and the public are required.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Proficiency in writing reports and correspondence.
  • Capability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to deal with sensitive matters confidentially.

Knowledge:

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Basic Outlook/Word/Excel and ability to learn and operate recruiting software (FrontRush, Synergy).
  • Basic graphic design skills or the ability to learn how to operate Photoshop and Gipper.

  • Travel for athletic contests, recruiting, coaches meetings and convention/caucus attendance is required.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the Assistant Coach regularly travels in outside weather conditions and is exposed to wet or humid conditions, extreme temperatures, dirt, and dust.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; reach, use objects, tools, or controls with hands or arms; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The individual must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
