Overview

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan is seeking experienced attorneys to fill positions in our Criminal and Civil Divisions. This is an open-continuous vacancy open until November 30, 2026, or until the positions are filled. Completed applications will be reviewed every Wednesday.

Position Type & Eligibility

Term appointment not to exceed September 30, 2029. Position may be made permanent without further competition.

Residency: Assistants must reside in the district or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information.

Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration.

Responsibilities

Assigned as Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) in Criminal or Civil Division, you will enforce federal criminal laws and handle assignments including but not limited to:

  • Drug trafficking, including fentanyl, precursor chemicals, and illegal drug use.
  • Immigration matters such as:
    • Gang‑related crimes involving aliens;
    • Child trafficking and smuggling involving aliens within the United States;
    • Unlawful voting by aliens;
    • Firearms trafficking and smuggling involving aliens;
    • Violations of the Alien Registration Act;
    • Violations or fraud related to Title IV of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act.

Responsibilities will increase in scope and complexity with training and experience.

Salary & Benefits

Assistant United States Attorney pay ranges from $84,655 to $197,100 (includes 29.12% Detroit/Flint locality pay). Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System.

Relocation expenses are not authorized.

Travel

Occasional travel outside the district may be required; travel within the district will be required.
