Job Description

Multnomah Athletic Club is more than Portland’s most legendary hub of sports and socializing. It’s like a small city unto itself. Where else can you find four restaurants, three pools, a climbing gym, state-of-the-art studios and fitness suite, a complex of racquet sport courts, massage offerings, a boutique, plus a grand ballroom and variety of events spaces all in one place? To say that every employee of MAC has room to move is an understatement almost as big as MAC’s 600,000 square feet of recreational possibilities.

Want a career with a future? A campus worth exploring? A one-of-a-kind community on which you can have a direct impact? MAC is all of those things and more.

The Role

As an Assistant Tennis Coach at the MAC, you’ll play a vital role in energizing our tennis community by teaching private and group lessons, growing a loyal client base, and promoting the sport in a fun, professional, and welcoming environment. You’ll collaborate with the Tennis Department to keep classes dynamic and organized while contributing to a culture of sportsmanship and growth.

This is a full-time, fully on-site role at our club in Portland, OR.

What You’ll Do

  • Be a Dynamic Coach: Lead private and group tennis lessons with enthusiasm, professionalism, and a passion for helping players improve.
  • Build a Loyal Following: Develop and maintain a consistent client base by meeting member needs and delivering exceptional instruction.
  • Support Programming: Assist the Head Tennis Coach/Manager by recommending and planning class offerings and schedules.
  • Create Smart Lesson Plans: Design fun, level-appropriate lesson plans that align with the skill development and goals of each group.
  • Manage the Details: Ensure private lesson billing and class rosters are accurate and up-to-date in RPOS.
  • Foster a Safe Space: Promote a safe and welcoming environment on and off the courts by maintaining clean facilities and working equipment.
  • Be a Community Leader: Promote MAC Tennis programs, encourage sportsmanship, and support member engagement across leagues, teams, and events.
  • Contribute to Camps & Events: Assist with camps, exhibitions, social mixers, and family tennis nights, ensuring a great experience for all.
  • Invest in Growth: Stay sharp by continually developing your coaching skills and bringing new ideas and drills to the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

  • High-Level Play: An NTRP rating of 4.5 or above, with the ability to demonstrate technique and strategy on court.
  • Tennis Expertise: Certification from a USTA-accredited organization (or international equivalent), plus a strong knowledge of USTA, UTR, and ITF systems.
  • Communication Skills: Friendly, clear, and confident communication style with players of all ages and skill levels.
  • Love for the Game: A deep passion for tennis that extends beyond the court including equipment, rules, history, and community involvement.
  • Professionalism & Organization: Strong time management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay organized during busy schedules.
  • Tech-Savviness: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and comfort navigating internal systems like RPOS.
  • Physical Readiness: The ability to be active on court for extended periods, including lifting up to 25 lbs. and running drills.
  • Customer-First Mindset: A service-oriented attitude and a team-focused approach that enhances every member’s experience
