Job summary

Roosevelt University Theatre Conservatory seeks an Assistant Technical Director (part-time, in-person) to guide and supervise the student construction crew during the mainstage season. The ATD will assist the TD with planning, budgeting, drafting, and coordinating tasks and schedules to ensure builds meet design and safety specifications.

The ideal candidate has solid carpentry experience in theatrical settings, strong leadership, and a passion for education.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • A proven track record in rough and finish carpentry in theatrical settings.
  • Solid knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Proficient with power tools (table saw, miter saw, circular saw, jigsaw, drills, sanding, router, panel saw, pneumatic tools).
  • Experience with Vectorworks drafting software.
  • Ability to read and understand scenic drawings and drafting.
  • Ability to create and read technical build diagrams and blueprints.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication and leadership abilities; passion for education.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the technical director with planning and budgeting for mainstage set builds.
  • Assist drafting and creation of technical drawings for builds.
  • Instruct tool use and construction techniques to students of varying skill levels.
  • Assign and explain tasks to the student construction crew.
  • Coordinate with the TD, scenic designer, and paint lead to set timeframes.
  • Attend production meetings and respond to production communications.
  • Help lead strike and perform building duties (rough and finish carpentry).
  • Maintain records of work with the TD and keep spaces clean and organized.
  • Coordinate and schedule student construction crew.
  • Mentor student set designers and supervise design deliverables.
  • Plan Miller builds with the TD and communicate with the Miller team.
  • Support maintenance, upkeep, and renovations of theater and shop spaces.

Job description

The Theatre Conservatory at Roosevelt University is looking to hire a skilled carpenter act as an Assistant Technical Director and provide guidance and supervision during the school year’s mainstage theatre season. This position’s responsibilities include planning for build, assigning and explaining tasks to the student construction crew, responding to repairs, and regularly inspecting work completed to ensure that it conforms to design and safety specifications. The ATD should also be able to help the technical director and director of production solve project-related problems.

Assistant Technical Director Responsibilities:
  • Assisting the technical director with the planning and budgeting for mainstage theatrical set builds.
  • Assisting the technical director with drafting and creating technical drawings for build.
  • Assisting the technical director with instruction of tool use and proper construction techniques to college students of skill levels that vary from novice to intermediate.
  • Assigning and explaining tasks to the student construction crew.
  • Communicating with technical director, scenic designer, and paint charge in order to determine the time frames within which projects should be complete.
  • Attending production meetings and respond to production communications as necessary.
  • Helping lead strike.
  • Performing all building duties required, including both rough and finish carpentry.
    Maintaining accurate records of all work done in coordination with the technical director.
  • Helping to maintain and clean theatrical and shop spaces.
  • Helping coordinate and schedule student construction crew.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Mentoring student set designers who work in the Miller, the CCPA black box theater.
  • Coaching students through basic scenic design process and ensure that they are submitting design deliverables.
  • Coordinating with technical director to plan Miller builds as needed.
  • Communicating with Miller production team on behalf of the scene shop.
  • Assist technical director with maintenance, upkeep, and renovations of the theater and shop spaces.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Proven experience in rough and finish carpentry, particularly in a theatrical setting.
  • Sound knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
  • Proficiency in operating power tools, including, but not limited to, table saw, miter saw, circ saw, jigsaw, power drills, sanding equipment, router, panel saw, and pneumatic tools.
  • Experienced in Vectorworks drafting software.
  • Ability to read and understand scenic drawings and drafting.
  • Ability to create and read technical build diagrams and blueprints.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Passion for education and/or experience teaching
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience repairing/maintaining hand tools and power tools
  • Experience with other drafting software, such as AutoCAD or SketchUp
  • Experience with theatrical rigging and rigging hardware/equipment
  • Experience or education in scenic design

The hourly pay for this part-time, in person, non-benefit eligible position is $25/hour. Additionally, this position runs through the academic year (9 months only).
