The School of Music invites applications for a non-tenure line faculty opportunity for
Assistant Teaching Professor of Commercial Voice & Musical Theatre beginning August 2025.

Our dynamic faculty function as collaborative, innovative, inclusive, and adaptive members of the College of Fine Arts community, both within and beyond the home unit, serving as quality teachers, productive in creative and/or scholarly work, engaged in public service activities, and contributing to the Ball State and Muncie communities and beyond. Additionally, lifelong learning at Ball State University extends educational engagement beyond the classroom and includes learning for professional development, personal enrichment, or other goals throughout one's lifetime. Faculty will be expected to participate in the department's, college's, and university's lifelong learning opportunities when available and may be assigned teaching responsibility in this area as part of their overall responsibilities.

This position will provide instruction in both the School of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance, fulfilling the following duties:

  • The ideal candidate will teach private voice to School of Music students who are enrolling in the newly approved commercial music degree program

  • The ideal candidate will teach required courses within the Musical Theatre and Acting Options including three different levels of Singing Actor, Musical Theatre technique courses, and additional collaborative courses that focus on training fully developed "triple threat" performers.

  • The ideal candidate will teach will be a collaborative bridge builder between Music and Theatre/Dance., including in the areas of pedagogy, curriculum, governance, and culture building.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in voice, musical theatre or related discipline completed by date of employment or equivalent professional experience.

  • At least 4 months (one semester) of experience teaching voice lessons to students in a collegiate/university setting.

  • Proficient piano skills, with the ability to accompany singers and ensembles with an understanding of the multiple musical styles within the musical theatre genre. Excellent sight-reading skills at the piano a must.

  • At least 4 months (one semester) of experience teaching courses that focus on musical theatre techniques and repertoire.

  • At least 8 months (one academic year) of teaching at the university/college level.


Authorization to work in the USCandidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications

  • M.F.A. or D.M.A. in Voice or Musical Theatre completed by date of employment.

  • At least 24 months (3 academic years) of teaching experience at the university/college level.

  • Ability to serve as an artist for production work when needed.

  • Experience with both contemporary and classical repertoire within the field of vocal training.

  • Substantial experience as a vocalist, actor, or performer in major venues.

  • Connections and recognitions within the professional music and/or musical theatre industries.
