Qualifications

• PhD in Geography, Environmental Studies, Environmental Science(s), or a related social science or interdisciplinary environmental field.
• Demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching in an innovative interdisciplinary environment.
• Independent teaching experience as instructor of record at the undergraduate level, with evidence of teaching effectiveness.
• Evidence of effective student mentorship or potential to mentor undergraduate students.
• Evidence of potential to contribute to an interdisciplinary and collaborative academic community.

Responsibilities

• Teach five undergraduate environmental social science courses per year, including ENVS 225 and other courses in the Social Science and Policy curriculum.
• Mentor undergraduate students, including through honors theses, directed readings, and independent research.

The Department of Environmental Sciences (ENVS) at Emory University in Atlanta invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor in Applied Environmental Social Sciences, beginning August 1, 2027. For this teaching-track position, we seek a dynamic and collaborative teacher‑scholar who can engage students in understanding and investigating the social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions of environmental challenges, and bring applied approaches to environmental social science teaching and research. This is a renewable three‑year appointment with the potential for promotion.

We are especially interested in candidates who:

• Strengthen teaching in environmental institutions, governance, policy, and related areas, with environmental questions and challenges at the core Contribute broadly to the Social Science and Policy curriculum, bringing environmental social science perspectives to environmental change Critically examine questions of power, inequality, distributional consequences, and competing interests in their teaching Contribute to field studies and experiential learning by integrating social and biophysical approaches to understanding environmental systems and challenges Bring expertise that creates opportunities for integration across the social and natural sciences, including in areas such as but not limited to water and natural resources, energy, or sustainability

The successful candidate will be expected to:

• Teach five undergraduate environmental social science courses per year, including ENVS 225 (Institutions and the Environment) and other courses in the Social Science and Policy curriculum Contribute to the Department’s interdisciplinary and field-based teaching, including ENVS 131 (Introduction to Field Studies) Mentor undergraduate students, including through honors theses, directed readings, and independent research Collaborate with faculty and students across the Department and University, and contribute to the Department’s intellectual and academic community
