Job Title: Purvis Lower Elementary - Assistant Teacher (2025-2026 School Year)

Reports to: Teacher or Principal

Receives Guidance From: Teacher, Principal

Job Purpose: To provide assistance in the instruction of basic skills and to ensure each student has access to all available resources in the classroom.

Duties And Responsibilities

1. Direct activities that free the supervising teacher for instruction.
2. Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and locations.
3. Participate in lesson and classroom activity planning.
4. Guide small groups of students in various activities to reinforce initial instruction.
5. Assist children in working and playing harmoniously.
6. Maintain order of desks, books, papers, materials, and supplies, and utilize educational media.
7. Alert the teacher to special needs of individual children.
8. Provide assistance and escort children as needed.
9. Help maintain individual records for each child.
10. Foster good eating habits and table manners.
11. Assist in maintaining neat work and study areas.
12. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise makeup work and testing (note: grading and parent conferences are not the responsibility of the assistant teacher).
13. Supervise children during play periods.
14. Collect and display educational display materials.
15. Participate in staff development to support district initiatives.
16. Maintain and responsibly use district-owned assets.
17. Undergo periodic evaluations as per policies.
18. Maintain confidentiality.
19. Ensure regular, dependable, punctual attendance.
20. Perform other duties as assigned by district authorities.

Qualifications

Education: Minimum of 48 college credit hours from an accredited institution or pass the Work Keys test as per Mississippi Department of Education requirements. Must submit transcripts or Work Keys certificate with application.

Physical Demands

The role requires talking, hearing, standing, walking, sitting, fine manipulation, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting up to 75 pounds occasionally. Reasonable accommodations can be made for individuals with disabilities.
