Qualifications

Job description

Position Summary
Assistant Teacher assists in developing and implementing a program of activities that promotes the social, emotional, and physical development of each child enrolled in a group in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards, Texas Child Care Minimum Standards, and NAEYC Standards. Assist teacher promote school readiness and sets appropriate goals that address the social-emotional, cognitive, language/literacy, perpetual motor and physical development, and approaches to learning. Assist teacher to develop individual learning goals. Assist teacher to successfully implement strategies that include positive reinforcement, active supervision, and parent and/or family engagement.

Job Function

  1. Assist the teacher in maintaining records on each child’s progress and development and compliance with the Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  2. Maintain and ensure the tracking of daily attendance and daily inspections of children in assigned classroom.
  3. Ensure the health, safety, and supervision of children at all times including high peak times such as: transitions, drop-off and dismissal, and special events.
  4. Actively supervise and ensure zoning for a view of children at all times to ensure accidents/incidents are prevented.
  5. Report and document any information regarding accidents, illness, and injury of children in your care immediately to your supervisor.
  6. Responsible for assisting the teacher with the full implementation of Head Start Practices for a preschool program including but not limited to the supervision of children, implementing and completing lesson plans, maintaining a well-organized classroom environment, and supporting the social and emotional development of children to ensure their optimal growth.
  7. Monitor and observe children daily to assess their skills, interests, and needs to facilitate learning, growth, and individualized planning for children.
  8. Assist teacher in creating, planning, and the implementation of daily program of activities and interactive parent-child activities, based on principles of child development and in accordance with the program’s curriculum.
  9. Assist in providing children with play activities designed to encourage children’s social and emotional skills, curiosity, exploration, and problem solving.
  10. Ensure each child’s personal hygiene needs are met by changing clothing when necessary, assisting with routine hand washing, and tooth brushing at least once a day.
  11. Assist in cleaning, sanitizing, and organizing the classroom at the end of the day.
  12. Assist the teacher in conducting home visits and parent-teacher conference two times a year.
  13. Work cooperatively and effectively with co-teacher to build an effective team.
  14. Establish a positive relationship with each child’s family and share information about the child’s day at the Center.
  15. Able to travel for business-related activities.
  16. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance in compliance with AVANCE-Houston policies and/or procedures, local, state, and federal laws.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education
Required: High School Diploma or GED from an accredited program with an Education Agreement to complete the CDA within one year.

Experience
Required: Six months experience with working with young children in an educational role.
