Job summary

WHEDco seeks an Assistant Teacher Floater for Urban Horizons Early Childhood Discovery Center, a year-round Early Learn NYC and Head Start program serving three- and four-year-olds. You will support multiple classrooms, help maintain ratios, and assist with curriculum planning under Lead Teacher guidance.

Requirements include a High School Diploma or 60 college credits, and English literacy. Bilingual skills and CDA are preferred.

Qualifications

• Have a High School Diploma or GED or 60 college credits and/or CDA approved by NAEYC.
• Proven ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English.
• Second language skills preferred.
• General knowledge of early childhood development.
• Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations and screening procedures.

Responsibilities

• Implement program goals, policies, and procedures; adhere to schedules and personnel practices.
• Check in daily with Education Director to review staffing and classroom needs and plan support.
• Provide classroom support across multiple classrooms to maintain adult-to-child ratios.
• Supervise children with age-appropriate education and development activities; assist curriculum planning with Lead Teacher.
• Maintain records of children’s progress and classroom materials; report issues to Education Director.
• Participate in meetings, trainings, and home visits as needed.

The Center serves 111 pre-school students from over 20 different countries. WHEDco’s full-day program offers a nurturing environment that allows children to develop confidence, think creatively, analyze information, and communicate effectively. Each year 100% of the students graduate prepared for kindergarten, ensuring that they begin their school careers ready to succeed.The Assistant Teacher Floater will support classrooms across the Center to maintain required ratios, provide classroom coverage, and support instructional continuity. This role requires flexibility to work across classrooms and collaborate closely with Lead Teachers and Center leadership to support program operations and student success.Responsibilities:Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher, Education Director, and Center Director, the Assistant Teacher Floater will be responsible for:Implement program goals, policies, and procedures while adhering to schedules and personnel practices.Check in daily with the Education Director to review staffing and classroom needs and develop a plan for classroom support.Provide classroom support across multiple classrooms, as assigned, to maintain required adult-to-child ratios and support program continuity.Assist in supervising children by planning and executing age-appropriate education, social, and developmental programs, creating and supervising a conducive learning environment, and collaborating with the Lead Teacher on curriculum planning for groups and individual children.Support the Lead Teacher in implementing curriculum and classroom activities that promote children’s learning and development.Assist in maintaining accurate records of children’s progress.Maintain classrooms, equipment, and materials in good condition and encourage their constructive use. Report damaged or hazardous equipment to the Education Director.Participate in team conferences, staff meetings, in-service trainings, and educational courses.Participate in parent meetings, conferences, and home visits, as needed.Maintain confidentiality of student and family information.Support positive communication and collaborative relationships with children, families, and Center staff.Flexibly transition between classrooms based on staffing and operational needs and, when necessary, provide temporary classroom coverage for one or more days.Perform other related duties as assigned by the Education Director and/or Center Director.An Assistant Teacher Floater will be required to meet the minimum requirements for the New York City Department of Health: Bureau of Day Care, Section 47.13 Staff and be at least 18 years of age and:Have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent, or;60 college credits, and/or;Child Development Associate Credential approved by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.Proven ability to read, write, and speak clearly in English. Strong skill in a second language most common amongst participants is also preferred.General knowledge of early childhood development.Strong organizational and communication skills.Ability to work flexibly across multiple classrooms and adapt to changing program needs.Satisfactory completion of required medical examinations and screening procedures.Ability to lift up to 30–50 pounds and conduct home visits using public transportation, including climbing stairs.Excellent benefits and competitive salary based on education and experience.
