Job summary

YMCA of Greater Hartford is seeking an Assistant Swim Team Coach in Granby, CT. The part-time, non-exempt role supports the Head Swim Team Coach, leading age-appropriate workouts and maintaining a safe, positive environment for swimmers.

The ideal candidate has competitive swimming and coaching experience, valid CPR/First Aid, and reliable weekend availability to attend meets and practices while engaging with families and staff.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience as a competitive swimmer; collegiate competitive swimming experience preferred
  • 1+ years swim coaching experience preferred
  • Possesses (or can obtain upon hire) USA Swimming and YMCA coaching credentials
  • Must demonstrate proficiency of swim skills and strong foundation in stroke mechanics with effective communication to swimmers and parents
  • Will require valid USA/ YMCA coaching certification
  • Weekend work at swim meets is required
  • Enthusiastic, dynamic presence with good communication skills
  • Certifications: CPR for Professional Rescuer, AED, and First Aid or willingness to obtain
  • 21 years of age or older preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist Head Swim Team Coach in creating age-appropriate workouts focusing on technique, endurance, stroke development, drills, etc.
  • Participate in structured practices in weekday evenings throughout the year
  • Help to record all workouts and track daily attendance
  • Assist Head Swim Team Coach with administrative matters relating to the team, swim meet arrangements and team performance as well as interaction with parents
  • Assist in coordinating and executing swim team competitions and meet registrations and recording times and collecting other relevant data at swim meets
  • Attend swim team events such as meets, meetings, social events, etc. at the direction of the head coach
  • Engage parents and cultivate relationships to create a collaborative swim team environment
  • Assist in swim team social event planning, as necessary
  • Assist in stroke clinics (if any) offered between competitive seasons
  • Participate in coach training opportunities offered by the Head Swim Team Coach
  • Assist in maintaining a clean, safe and positive environment for swim team participants

Reports to: Head Swim Team Coach & Aquatics Director

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Head Swim Team Coach, The Assistant Swim Team Coach provides direct leadership, instruction andmotivation for swim team participants, is expected to attend swim meets and teamfunctions throughout the year, and is responsible for creating and maintaining aclean, safe and positive environment for the swim team participants.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 30 pounds in weight.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency
