Job description

We are looking for a Swim Coach to work 2-3 mornings a week form 6:30-9:30am. In addition to coaching this position includes 2-4 hours per week of admin duties. This job will shift to evening hours in September.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Swim Team Assistant Coach at the YMCA of York & York County creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining the safety of all aquatic facility users in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develops, promotes, and manages the competitive swimming program in manner consistent with USA Swimming and YMCA standards.
  2. Supervises the general facilities on-site (pool, pool deck, equipment storage, locker rooms) as well as off-site for upkeep, cleanliness and proper usage during and following program use.
  3. Maintains proper records/department files.
  4. Maintains constant supervision of swimmers, identifies swimmers who need assistance, and supports swimmers as necessary to ensure a positive learning environment.
  5. Attend team meets as directed by Director of Competitive Swimming. Assist the team in set up procedure and clean up procedure during home meets at their YMCA facility.
  6. Under the direction of the Head Coach, seeks educational opportunities through the National YMCA competitive Swimming Coaches Association and the American Swimming Coaches Association.
  7. Adheres to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensures consistency with evidence-based practices. Relate to the individual swimmer on a personal basis at practice, meets and other venues. Relate to parents concerns through individual contact before or after practice.
  8. Follow National YMCA philosophy of "Everybody Swims" no matter the outcome of a meet.
  9. Complete all other required duties requested by Director of Competitive swimming and/or Aquatics Director.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum age of 18
  • No less than 1 year experience coaching similar Swim Teams
  • Certifications: CPR/AED/First Aid Certification, Lifeguarding and/or Coaches Safety Certification
  • USA and YMCA coach certification within 1 month of hire
  • Obtain Mandated Reporter Clearance
  • Complete all required trainings within 1 month of hire

  • Physically perform all skills required of a swim coach including but not limited to kneeling, reaching, pushing, balancing, crouching, standing, pulling, grasping, repetitive motions, stooping, walking, lifting, talking, hearing, digital dexterity, and driving a vehicle
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around coaching area
  • Has good depth perception and field of vision
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness
  • Be prepared to work in outside weather conditions during the season

Obtain a State Police, Child Abuse, NSOR and/or FBI clearance in compliance with Child Protective Services Law and YMCA policy.
