Job summary

Position Overview

The Assistant Supervisor supports the Production Manager and provides day-to-day operational leadership for the assigned assembly area to ensure safe, efficient, on-time, and high-quality production. This role provides day-to-day direction to assembly workers, ensures safety procedures are followed, trains new employees, assigns daily work, and assists with performance reviews and disciplinary actions.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Safety and Compliance Ensure all team members follow company safety rules, procedures, and PPE requirements at all times. Verify employees are properly trained and authorized before performing assigned work or operating equipment. Conduct daily safety checks of work areas, tools, and equipment; report hazards and help correct them. Stop work and take immediate action if unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed. Participate in safety meetings and support continuous improvement of safety practices.

  2. Daily Leadership and Work Coordination The Assistant Supervisor provides direct day-to-day operational leadership to assigned employees but does not independently hire, terminate, suspend, or issue formal disciplinary action unless specifically authorized by the Production Manager. Assign daily tasks and workstations to assembly team members based on skills, experience, and production needs. Communicate production goals, priorities, and schedule changes at the start of each shift. Monitor workflow and reassign resources as needed to avoid bottlenecks and meet deadlines. Coordinate with supervisors, maintenance, and other departments to support smooth operations.

  3. Training and Employee Development Train new hires and cross-train existing employees on assembly processes, work instructions, and safety procedures. Demonstrate proper use of tools, equipment, and materials; verify understanding and competency. Maintain up-to-date training records and provide feedback to the Supervisor on employee progress. Serve as a first point of contact for questions about procedures or quality standards.

  4. Quality and Documentation Ensure team members follow work instructions, drawings, and quality standards. Perform spot checks and visual inspections of assembled products; report and help resolve quality issues. Support continuous improvement activities to increase efficiency and reduce waste or rework. Assist in tracking production data (counts, scrap, downtime) and reporting results to management.

  5. Leadership, Performance, and Employee Relations Lead by example with a strong focus on safety, quality, attendance, and work ethic. Provide clear, respectful instructions and feedback to team members. Assist in conducting performance evaluations by providing input, documentation, and observations on employee performance. Support in administering disciplinary actions, including documenting incidents, coaching employees, and participating in disciplinary meetings in accordance with company policies. Help resolve minor conflicts or issues within the team and elevate when necessary. Support a positive, respectful work environment that encourages teamwork and accountability.

  6. Continuous Improvement and 5S Support continuous improvement activities focused on safety, quality, delivery, productivity, cost, and workplace organization. Identify deviations from standard work and support corrective actions. Participate in root‑cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions. Recommend improvements to assembly methods, tooling, workplace organization, safety, quality, material flow, and production processes. Support lean manufacturing initiatives and implementation of standardized work. Maintain and promote company 5S standards within assigned work areas.

Marginal Job Functions

Work in Production, Service, Test, Paint, or other operational areas as needed, provided the employee has the required skills, training, and qualifications for the work. Support special projects, audits, inventory activities, equipment moves, or other operational requirements as assigned. Provide input to the Production Manager or Plant Manager regarding employee performance, training needs, operational issues, and improvement opportunities.

Necessary Prior Experience
  • Typically, 5 or more years of relevant experience in wind gearbox, power transmission, heavy equipment, industrial assembly, test, paint, or a comparable manufacturing environment.
  • Equivalent combinations of relevant assembly experience, technical knowledge, training, and demonstrated leadership ability may be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate hourly employees in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, and cross‑train employees.
  • Ability to prioritize work and make routine decisions in a production environment.
  • Ability to identify problems, coordinate available resources, and escalation issues appropriately.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical assembly practices, drawings, tools, measuring equipment, and quality requirements.
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Working knowledge of SAP or a similar ERP system preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate production priorities and technical requirements clearly.
  • Good organizational and problem‑solving skills.
Educational Requirements

High school diploma or GED required. Additional technical training, apprenticeship, vocational education, manufacturing certifications, or equivalent relevant manufacturing experience preferred.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to regularly work in a manufacturing/shop‑floor environment.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb stairs and access production areas as required.
  • Ability to wear required PPE.
  • Ability to safely lift and handle materials within company‑established limits.
  • Ability to work around industrial machinery, cranes, forklifts, tooling, oils, and other normal manufacturing conditions.
