Job summary

Evolution Veterinary Specialists, a privately owned AAHA-accredited hospital in Lakewood, CO, seeks an Assistant Supervisor Technician to lead and mentor technicians while supporting clinical care and smooth daily operations.

You will partner with the department Supervisor and Leads to maintain high patient care standards, manage staffing, and drive process improvements. This role offers growth into a future Supervisor position in a fast-paced specialty and emergency setting.

Your Role as an Assistant Supervisor Technician

As an Assistant Supervisor Technician, you will serve as a key leadership member within your assigned department, working closely with the department Supervisor to support excellent patient care, efficient daily operations, and a strong team culture.

The Assistant Supervisor Technician provides leadership and support to the technicians within their assigned service and helps oversee the department’s Leads. This position combines the clinical responsibilities and mentorship of a Lead Technician with additional operational and supervisory responsibilities.

When the department Supervisor is unavailable, the Assistant Supervisor Technician will assume delegated supervisory responsibilities and help ensure the department continues to operate smoothly, safely, and efficiently.

This position is designed for an experienced technician who is ready to take the next step in their leadership career, develop advanced management skills, and potentially grow into a future Supervisor role.

You'll Use Your Expertise To:

Clinical & Leadership Responsibilities

Lead and support technicians within your assigned department

Provide clinical guidance, mentorship, and support to technicians and department Leads

Maintain high standards of patient care, safety, and clinical excellence

Assist with complex cases and procedures within your area of expertise

Help ensure department protocols, workflows, and clinical standards are consistently followed

Support the development and competency progression of technicians

Serve as a clinical resource and leadership presence for the department

Assist the Supervisor and Leads with day-to-day clinical and operational needs

Department Operations & Supervisory Support

Help run the daily operations of the assigned department

Assume delegated supervisory responsibilities when the department Supervisor is unavailable

Build and adjust staffing assignments and coverage based on departmental needs

Monitor attendance, punctuality, call-outs, and staffing gaps

Help coordinate coverage and proactively identify staffing concerns

Support the department Leads and provide guidance when operational issues arise

Hold team members accountable to departmental expectations and established standards

Address interpersonal and team conflicts and elevate concerns appropriately

Participate in employee performance feedback and development conversations

Participate in interviewing and hiring for departmental positions

Assist with onboarding and competency progression for new team members

Track required training, competencies, certifications, and compliance requirements

Help develop, update, communicate, and enforce departmental SOPs

Monitor departmental metrics and KPIs

Identify recurring operational challenges and work with leadership to implement solutions

Make appropriate operational decisions within delegated authority without waiting for supervisor approval

Communicate departmental needs, concerns, and successes to the Supervisor and hospital leadership

Act as a consistent leadership presence and resource for the department

Leadership Development

Serve as the department Supervisor's second-in-command

Support and help develop the department's Lead Technicians

Develop advanced leadership, communication, and operational management skills

Work closely with the Supervisor to learn department-level management

Take ownership of assigned projects and departmental initiatives

Help foster a positive, accountable, collaborative team culture

Develop the skills and experience necessary to eventually step into a Supervisor role

Schedule

• 4 x 10-hour shifts
• Schedule structure may vary based on department placement
• Weekend and holiday rotation may apply depending on departmental needs

Requirements

Required:

Current RVT License and Registration with DORA

Demonstrated experience in a veterinary clinical setting

Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills

Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced specialty and emergency environment

Demonstrated ability to mentor, support, and lead other team members

Preferred:

AS/BS/BA in Veterinary Technology or related field

Minimum of 5 years of experience as an RVT, preferably in a specialty or emergency setting

Previous leadership, mentorship, or supervisory experience

Experience working in multiple areas of veterinary medicine

BLS/ALS CPR certification

Experience with employee training, onboarding, or competency development

Experience with scheduling, departmental operations, or team management

Experience monitoring departmental metrics or implementing process improvements

Work Environment & Physical Demands

This role is physically active and fast-paced. You will need to:

Lift up to 50 lbs frequently

Kneel, stoop, crouch, and remain on your feet for extended periods

Operate medical and office equipment

Work around biological hazards and cleaning agents

Communicate clearly in noisy environments

Work effectively in a high-stress, rapidly changing specialty environment
