Job summary

Town of Luray is seeking an Assistant Superintendent of Public Works to support the Superintendent and supervise full-time and part-time staff in maintaining roads, water distribution, sewer systems, buildings, and grounds.

The role requires experience in public works, strong leadership, and the ability to respond to after-hours emergencies. A Virginia CDL Class A or B must be obtained within 12 months; overtime may apply as this is a non-exempt position.

Qualifications

• Experience supervising full-time and part-time staff in a public works setting.
• Clear communication skills and ability to develop work plans.
• Knowledge of water distribution and sewer collection systems is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist Superintendent and supervise staff in maintenance and improvements to roads, rights-of-way, water and sewer systems, buildings, grounds, and solid waste.

The Town of Luray is seeking an outstanding individual to serve as our next Assistant Superintendent of Public Works. This position will support the Superintendent, and supervise full-time and part-time staff to manage, direct, coordinate, and complete the construction of and improvements to the maintenance of roads, public rights-of-way, water distribution, sewer collection, buildings and grounds, and solid waste collection within the Public Works Department.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent. This is a full-time position that requires response to after-hours emergency situations and weather conditions. Prior experience with water distribution systems, sewer collection systems, road construction, maintenance of traffic, and safety regulations required. The ability to develop and communicate work plans and schedules to staff is imperative. Clear communication skills are essential.

A combination of education and experience in public works will be considered, along with individual qualifications and certifications. A Virginia CDL Class A or B is required to be obtained in 12 months. This is considered an essential position and requires physically demanding work in adverse weather conditions. Responding to community needs is critical for success. This position is Non-Exempt and is eligible for overtime pay or leave hours. This working and training position fills the role and responsibilities of the Superintendent in their absence.
