Main Purpose of Job

Join Us in Making a Difference at DJS! The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We seek passionate individuals for the role of Assistant Superintendent to make a meaningful impact on youth and the community.

The main purpose is to assist the Facility Administrator in managing and supervising the operation of a 72-bed juvenile facility, including personnel and youth court-ordered into custody.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist Facility Administrator in managing daily operations of a juvenile facility in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Oversee security operations and supervise direct care personnel, ensuring safety, security, and compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate staff development and training programs in line with MPCTC standards, ensuring staff are aware of current trends and practices.
Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Experience: Six (6) years supervising youth in a juvenile facility, community program, or correctional setting, including at least two (2) years overseeing staff working with youth.

Note: An Associate’s degree may substitute for up to 1 year of experience; a Bachelor’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years.

Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, social or behavioral sciences preferred.
  • Experience working with youth in treatment settings.
  • Ability to teach, train, and build effective teams.
  • Safety and security-minded with effective system implementation skills.
  • Flexibility to work evening hours.
