Job summary

Dugan & Meyers is seeking an Assistant Superintendent to support the Superintendent in scheduling, coordinating, and supervising field personnel and subcontractors. The role involves coordinating multiple trades, tracking progress, and maintaining project safety and quality on site.

Ideal candidates have a two-year construction degree or equivalent with at least five years of construction experience, strong scheduling and cost-control skills, and the ability to manage several disciplines

  • Minimum of five years in construction with knowledge of scheduling, costs, and multidisciplinary supervision.
  • Ability to plan logistics, manpower, materials and document hours worked.

Responsibilities

  • Assist planning and supervise field coworkers, determine logistics plan, manpower, quantities and hours.
  • Coordinate work across crafts and subcontractors to follow the project schedule.
  • Maintain communication with designers, subcontractors, estimators and tradespeople.
  • Resolve coordination and productivity problems; monitor safety and conduct inspections.
  • Support safety programs, toolbox talks and morning huddles on site.
  • Attend meetings with team, subcontractors, pre-construction and owner representatives.
  • Review budgets, labor productions, and cost reports with Superintendent and Project Manager.
  • Ensure subcontractors comply with agreements and schedule; maintain proactive communication.
  • Help develop and update the project schedule monthly; assist in meeting milestones.
  • Assist in reviewing estimates and means/methods to meet material and labor targets.
  • Monitor equipment billings; coordinate manpower projections with Superintendent.

Job description

Primary Function:

The Assistant Superintendent provides support to the Superintendent in scheduling, coordinating and supervising subcontractors’ and Dugan & Meyers’ field co-workers, which may involve supervising one or more trades. (i.e. laborers, carpenters, etc.) May assist in the coordination of several foremen in the case of a large-scale self-perform project.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Assists in the planning and supervision of field coworkers, including determining logistics plan, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment, temporary power sources, work schedule and documenting actual hours worked.
  • Coordinates assigned work with work of different crafts, or other contractors. Manages and ensures all subcontractors follow the project schedule.
  • Along with the Superintendent and Project Manager, maintains ongoing communication with designers, subcontractors, estimators and tradespeople to ensure that work complies with drawings, specifications and schedule.
  • Timely resolves problems involving coordination and productivity, etc. as required.
  • Shares responsibility for safety. Monitors the field personnel compliance with project safety program requirements; documents and ensures that prevention and corrective measures are implemented. Performs documented safety inspections as requested. Assists with the safety training, tool box talks, and morning huddles.
  • Serves as an additional contact with other parties and organizations to ensure all required materials, equipment, inspections, etc. support the craft activities and project schedule.
  • Assists in the completion of daily reports describing activities completed, critical conversations and issues, weather conditions, etc. Enters reports into project management software being utilized on site as needed.
  • Actively participates in weekly team, subcontractor, pre-construction and owner meetings.
  • Reviews monthly budget and labor productions with the Superintendent. Reviews monthly cost reports with the Superintendent and Project Manager.
  • Reads, manages and holds subcontractors accountable to the subcontract agreement. Maintains open lines of communication and a proactive approach.
  • In conjunction with the Superintendent, develops and implements a complete project schedule and update no less than monthly.
  • Supports the Superintendent in achieving all project milestones. Reviews original project estimate and assists in the means and methods to meet or exceed target material and labor cost.
  • Reviews external and internal equipment billings no less than monthly with the Superintendent.
  • Understands monthly manpower projections and coordinates manpower needs with the Superintendent and/or General Superintendent.
  • Coordinates the submittal of weekly time and quantities on self-perform work with the Superintendent.
  • Aids in the monitoring of overall project quality. Assists in all inspections, and pre-pour checklists.
  • May need to work in a dual role as a craft foreman or work with their tools when requested depending on Company workload, project size, and other job requirements.
  • Performs additional assignments as directed by the Superintendent.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience:

Education and experience requirements include the minimum of a two-year construction degree or equivalent combinations of related technical training and/or experience, plus continuing education in supervision/personnel management. Minimum of five years' construction experience in construction technology, methods, equipment, tools and work procedures. Understanding of construction scheduling and cost control and possessing the ability to control and supervise multiple disciplines are essential.
