Overview
The Job in a Nutshell:
The Assistant Store Manager is the second-in-command of the store, responsible for its successful operation and profitability, including training, directing, and monitoring all department staff.
Responsibilities
Main Responsibilities:
- Greet and serve customers according to company standards of World Class customer service.
- Provide professional leadership and set an example for staff as a manager.
- Handle customer complaints appropriately and in accordance with company policy.
- Maintain an inviting and shoppable store environment.
- Ensure desired products are in stock and handle special orders per company policy.
- Answer phones per standards and spend at least 75% of time assisting customers, directing staff, and attending to all departments.
- Train staff on exemplary customer service and hold them accountable.
- Ensure staff compliance with applicable food safety certifications and registrations.
- Meet and exceed targets in sales, sales per labor hour, average ticket, customer count, COGS for produce, and EBITDA.
- Order products from correct vendors to maintain margins and receive proper discounts.
- Maintain in-stock conditions and monitor product mix, including analyzing departments to keep top sellers and introduce new products.
- Manage perishables, markdowns, and ensure proper stock rotation and stocking standards.
- Assist in hiring, training, and managing store personnel, including scheduling and performance evaluations.
- Address performance and disciplinary issues promptly with HR support.
- Maintain clear communication with staff, including conducting staff meetings and posting company updates.
- Ensure safety guidelines are followed at all times.
- Complete all operational responsibilities and paperwork timely, including daily schedules, checklists, and reports.
- Respond to departmental calls and assist with coverage as needed.
- Manage disruptions like loiterers, solicitation, weather emergencies, and bathroom misuse.
- Work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and approximately 45 hours per week.
- Lead by example, supporting decisions from the home office and following communications.
- Be proactive in adapting to changing work demands and perform hands-on tasks as needed.

Qualifications
Recipe for Success:
- High school diploma or GED; 1-2 years management experience in grocery or related retail, natural foods industry a plus.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to pass food safety training and obtain necessary certifications.
- Must be able to obtain forklift certification.
- Maintain up-to-date food safety certifications through continuing education and registration.
- Highly organized with a sense of urgency.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Ability to follow directions and complete tasks.
- Cashier trained.
- Proficient in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
