Job summary

The Salvation Army ARC San Jose is seeking a motivated Retail Store Manager to lead day-to-day operations in Salinas. You will oversee point-of-sale, inventory, donations, and merchandising while ensuring excellent service and adherence to ARC programs.

Responsibilities

Overview

The Salvation Army (TSA) Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) is a no-fee program to assist men and women in completing the rehabilitation program. TSA is committed to the diligence and devotion of its employees who support the programs and mission.

Position Objectives
  1. To provide customers with the best selection, exceptional service, and well-organized stores so we can offer spiritual, social, and rehabilitation programs to those in need.
  2. Accountable for meeting store sales and income budget expectations while managing expenses to maximize profitability.
  3. Create a positive and mentoring environment for Beneficiaries (ARC rehabilitation program participants) through collaboration with program staff.
  4. Implement positive and effective Work Therapy Assignments (WTA) and keep Beneficiaries on the right track and focus where they need to improve.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent REQUIRED.
  • Minimum of 2 years previous Retail Management/Supervisory experience (thrift preferred).
  • Basic understanding of office applications, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Must hold a valid Driver's license, able to pass MVR report (required), able to show proof of insurance and have access to a motor vehicle. REQUIRED
  • Must pass background check, which will include Criminal History and Sex Offender Registry.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, store employees, customers and donors.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, clothing carts, merchandise carts, rolling clothing racks, fixtures, furniture dollies, platform trucks and carts, hand trucks and miscellaneous carts.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to perform various repetitive motion tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Takes an active role and partners with the Store Manager in the day-to-day operation of the store, including opening/closing procedures, point of sale operations, inventory management, rotation, ARC merchandising standards, and donations.
  2. Assumes responsibility for day-to-day store operations (personnel and cash handling) in the absence of the Store Manager.
  3. Monitors and analyzes key performance indicators to drive store sales and profitability as projected by budget and goals.
  4. In the absence of Store Manager, schedules store employees and coordinates daily morning and shift change team meetings; maintains payroll records and attendance.
  5. Assists Store Manager with hiring, training, and directing the store team to ensure proficiency and delivers performance coaching.
  6. Communicates personnel issues and performance results with Store Manager; may issue disciplinary actions in coordination with HR and District leadership.
  7. Ensures high levels of customer and donor satisfaction and maintains positive community relations; develops strategies to improve service.
  8. BRP (Back Room Processing) – supports the Store Manager to ensure back room processors/warehouse staff meet daily processing goals.
  9. Supervises, supports, and reports on program Beneficiaries when Work Therapy Assignments are in place.
  10. Protects store currency, inventory, and property, including cash handling, deposits, and security of goods and premises.
  11. Ensures building security during non-operating hours and follows alarm and alert protocols.
  12. Maintains safety measures per ARC policy and regulations; reports safety issues and participates in weekly and monthly safety meetings.
  13. May transfer or be relocated to other stores based on business needs.
  14. Completes tasks as assigned by District Sales Manager, Command Retail Directors, and Command Administration.

Schedule

Stores operate seven days per week. Schedules are determined by management and employees must be flexible to ensure adequate coverage; full-time associates may work evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Education and Experience
  • GED or better; High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
