Job description

Overall Job Summary

This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. The role serves as the second in charge of store operations, supporting the Store Manager. Responsibilities include providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, and performing operational activities throughout the store. The position also promotes a safe and productive work environment for all team members, customers, and vendors, and involves training team members on policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

It is essential to be available, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented to fulfill the following requirements:

1. Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
2. Work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
3. Uphold and promote a safe, productive work environment by following policies and procedures.
4. Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
   • Thank the customer
   • Engage with the customer and/or pet
   • Advise on products or services
   • Make the experience memorable
5. Perform a variety of duties during 95% of the workday, including:
   • Assisting in store operations, driving sales and profit, and delegating tasks.
   • Supporting team member counseling, hiring, scheduling, and training.
   • Executing merchandising activities and store procedures.
   • Transporting deposits, assessing store conditions, organizing workflow, and merchandise recovery.
   • Participating in freight processing, price changes, resolving customer issues, and ensuring safety and loss prevention.
   • Communicating with team members and operating cash register and computer systems.
   • Ensuring the safety and care of live animals, including sanitization and documentation.
6. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Previous retail leadership experience is required; pet/live animal knowledge is preferred.
• Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred; ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

• Ability to perform all team member responsibilities.
• Knowledge of pet/live animals and products is strongly preferred.
• Strong interpersonal skills and conflict resolution abilities.
• Basic computer skills.

Working Conditions

• Generally indoor with moderate noise; shifts from 4 to over 8 hours.
• Maintain a safe environment following safety guidelines.
• Work on hard surfaces with adequate lighting and temperature.

Physical Requirements

• Frequent lifting, reaching, standing, kneeling, and movement throughout the store.
• Ability to operate store equipment and complete documentation accurately.
• Ability to communicate effectively and complete training and certifications.
• Ability to travel and operate a vehicle as needed.
• This role is non-sedentary and requires physical stamina.
