Overall Job Summary

This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. The position serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager. Duties include providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, performing operational activities, and guiding store Team Members. It also involves promoting a safe and productive work environment and training Team Members on policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

It is essential to be available, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented, fulfilling the following requirements:

  1. Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  2. Work scheduled shifts, including varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  3. Support a safe and productive work environment by following policies and procedures.
  4. Support selling initiatives (TEAM): thank customers, engage with pets, advise on products, and create memorable experiences.
  5. Perform a variety of duties during 95% of the day, including:
  • Assisting in store operations, driving sales, and delegating tasks.
  • Supporting staffing, training, and team development.
  • Executing merchandising activities and store procedures.
  • Handling deposits, assessing store conditions, and organizing workflow.
  • Merchandise recovery, participating in freight, and price changes.
  • Resolving customer issues, adhering to loss prevention, and communicating with team members.
  • Operating cash registers and supervising cash handling.
  • Ensuring the safety and care of live animals, including sanitation and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications
    • Previous retail leadership experience required; pet/live animal knowledge preferred.
    • Supervisory experience is a plus.
    • Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.
    • High school diploma or equivalent preferred; ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential.
    Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities
    • Ability to perform all team responsibilities.
    • Pet and live animal knowledge is strongly preferred.
    • Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
    • Basic computer skills.
    Working Conditions
    • Indoor environment with moderate noise; outdoor areas are hard surfaces.
    • Shifts typically no less than 4 hours, possibly exceeding 8 hours.
    • Maintain safety standards for team members and customers.
    Physical Requirements
    • Frequent lifting, reaching, standing, kneeling, and climbing.
    • Ability to move throughout the store and operate equipment safely.
    • Ability to process information and merchandise, and complete documentation.
    • Ability to travel and operate a vehicle as needed.
