Overall Job Summary

This position is responsible for proficiency in all areas of a retail operation. The position serves as the second in charge of operations to the Store Manager. Duties include providing leadership and direction to the store team, ensuring a positive customer shopping experience, performing operational activities throughout the store, and guiding the store Team Members. It also involves promoting a safe and productive work environment for all Team Members, customers, and vendors, as well as training Team Members on policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Min 5%)

It is essential that you be available, flexible, adaptable, and service-oriented, as you must be able to fulfill all of the following requirements:

  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • Work scheduled shifts and have the ability to work varied hours, days, nights, weekends, and overtime as dictated by business needs.
  • Uphold and promote a safe and productive work environment by following and enforcing policies and procedures.
  • Support selling initiatives (TEAM):
    • Thank the Customer
    • Engage with the customer and/or pet
    • Advise on products or services
    • Make it Memorable
  • This position requires performing a combination of duties during 95% of the day. The duties include:
    • Assist Store Manager in Store Operations, including driving sales, profit, customer loyalty, planning, prioritization, and delegating tasks.
    • Support Store Manager in Team Member counseling, hiring/staffing, scheduling, training, and maintaining a productive environment.
    • Execute merchandising activities, perform opening/closing procedures, transport deposits, assess store conditions, organize workflow, merchandise recovery, participate in freight process, price changes, resolve customer issues, adhere to loss prevention standards, communicate with team members, operate cash register, assist with policy application, ensure animal safety, and complete documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous retail leadership experience is required. Experience with pet/live animals is strongly preferred. Supervisory experience is preferred. Must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred but not required. Ability to read, write, and count accurately is essential.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Ability to perform responsibilities of Team Members.
  • Pet/live animal, pet food, and product knowledge is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to resolve issues ethically and with minimal conflict.
  • Basic computer skills.

Working Conditions

  • Generally indoor with moderate noise. Work shifts vary, generally no less than 4 hours and may exceed 8 hours.
  • Promote safety and adhere to safety guidelines.
  • Indoor floors and outdoor lots are hard surfaces; lighting and temperature are adequate.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent lifting or reaching overhead, standing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, squatting, bending, stooping, and climbing ladders.
  • Move throughout the store during shifts, operate store equipment, and communicate effectively.
  • Complete documentation, complete training, travel as needed, and operate a vehicle for business.
  • This position is non-sedentary and requires physical and mental stamina for movement throughout the store and outdoor areas.
