Job summary

MnDOT's Office of Traffic Engineering is seeking an Assistant State Signal & Lighting Engineer to guide statewide traffic electrical systems design and operation, including signals and roadway lighting, with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

The role involves policy development, cross-district collaboration, mentoring staff, and evaluating new products, while supporting MnDOT’s connected and automated vehicle initiatives. This is a senior professional role with statewide impact.

Qualifications

  • Experience with traffic signal design and operation at a statewide level.
  • Knowledge of electrical principles and the National Electrical Code.
  • Ability to provide guidance and support to team members.
  • Experience reviewing technical information and solving complex problems.
  • Supervisory experience enforcing policies and agreements.

Responsibilities

  • Direct development and coordination of statewide policies for signal design and operation.
  • Coordinate with districts on signal operations and shared services.
  • Represent non-Metro districts in signal design decisions.
  • Provide technical support for training programs in traffic electrical systems.
  • Evaluate new products and methods for traffic electrical designs.
  • Manage traffic signal related projects and liaison for research initiatives.
  • Assist MnDOT’s Connected and Automated Vehicle program focusing on signal devices.
