Job Title: Assistant State Veterinarian

Job Description:
The Animal Industry Division of the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food has six main programs:
- Animal Health – Focuses on prevention and control of animal diseases, with special attention to diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
- Meat and Poultry Inspection – Assures wholesome products for consumers.
- Livestock Inspection (brand registration and inspection) – Offers protection to the livestock industry through law enforcement.
- Fish Health – Protects fish health in the state and addresses concerns of fish food production and processing.
- Elk Farming and Elk Hunting Parks – Regulates the domestic elk industry with an emphasis on protecting Utah's wild elk population.
- Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories – Focuses on disease diagnosis and surveillance.

Responsibilities:
- Develops, directs, and/or evaluates programs.
- Coordinates and/or acts as a liaison between agency or program and other agencies, programs, organizations, suppliers, etc.
- Coordinates program activities, services, and/or program implementation with private providers, other governmental entities, program users, etc.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines.
- Acts as a resource for management and staff; provides technical support within area of responsibility.
- Responds to reportable animal diseases and zoonotic diseases.
- Provides expertise, outreach, and education to producers, veterinarians, and other stakeholders.
- Supervises program staff.
- Helps increase animal traceability.
- Inspects slaughter plants and performs dispositions on animals.
- Serves as the state veterinarian in absentia.
- Speaks before a group of people.
- Works with all animal species humanely.
Minimum Requirements:
- Experience in large animal veterinary medicine.
- A current Utah veterinary license and USDA Category II accreditation.
- Experience in inspection of animals.
- Knowledge of various disease control and eradication programs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine.
- Must be licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture.
- Must be United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) certified.
- Ability to work in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g., working at great heights, extreme outdoor weather conditions, potential physical attack.
- Requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, defending oneself and/or others against physical attack.
- A valid driver license is required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
