Job summary

Cherokee Nation Entertainment is hiring an Assistant Starter to ensure the safe and smooth start of each race at our Oklahoma track. You will assist in loading horses into the starting gates and support the Starter in maintaining safety for horses and jockeys.

Ideal candidates have a good understanding of horse behavior, quick reflexes and the ability to work calmly under pressure in a fast-paced environment. This full-time role requires standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, and teamwork.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• 1 year of related experience (horse handling, equine industry) preferred.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain an OHRC gaming and racing license.

Responsibilities

• Aid the Starter in safely and efficiently loading and holding horses in and around the starting gates.
• Ensure the safety of both horses and jockeys at all times during the starting process.
• Work effectively as a part of the starting gate team.

• Quick reflexes and the ability to react calmly in high-pressure situations.
• Requires frequent standing and walking. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Involves considerable exposure to smoke, extreme temperatures, dirt, chemicals, dust, and fumes, typical of a racetrack environment.
