About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer to support our ecological restoration practice in the Pacific Northwest and across the U.S. The ideal candidate will have strong water resources engineering skills and experience in river, wetland, and floodplain restoration projects.

This position is based in Corvallis, Oregon, or Whitefish, Montana, with projects throughout the Pacific Northwest. It offers full-time employment with benefits, flexible hybrid work options, and occasional travel for site assessments, data collection, and construction observation.

The role can be hired at the following levels:

• Assistant Staff Restoration Engineer: Up to 1 year of relevant experience.
• Staff Restoration Engineer: At least 2 years of relevant experience.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until a qualified pool is formed. We will consider all submissions carefully.

What you will accomplish

• Conduct fieldwork for river morphology, restoration design, and project monitoring, including surveying and data collection.
• Process data and produce maps and reports.
• Analyze water resources data using geospatial tools, models, and statistics.
• Apply engineering principles to execute tasks and prepare documentation.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team on project design.
• Develop AutoCAD Civil 3D plans and assist with drafting.
• Provide construction oversight, including survey staking and compliance checks.
• Follow safety protocols and promote safety awareness.

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications

• B.S. in Civil or Water Resources Engineering or related field
• Engineer in Training (EIT) registration
• Up to 1 year of related experience or relevant coursework
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills
• Proficiency in hydrologic, hydraulic, and statistical methods
• Experience with hydraulic modeling software (e.g., USACE HEC suite)
• Experience with CAD/GIS software (Autodesk Civil3D, ESRI ArcDesktop)
• Valid driver’s license

Preferred qualifications

• 2+ years of related experience or relevant coursework
• Knowledge of fluvial geomorphology, river mechanics, sediment transport
• Field surveying experience with GPS and total stations
• Ability to travel overnight and work in diverse field conditions
