Qualifications

  • Preferred: Master’s degree in exercise science or related field.
  • Or equivalent education and/or experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strength, speed and conditioning programs.
  • Instruct individuals and groups in training activities.
  • Coordinate performance testing and educational program development.
  • Consult with sports medicine staff on injury prevention and nutrition education.
  • Maintain safe training environments and effective communication with staff and athletes.
  • Support hiring, training, and supervision of student interns as needed.

Job Summary

The University of Portland is a National Collegiate Athletics Association ( NCAA ) Division I institution and West Coast Conference ( WCC ) member located in Portland, Oregon.The Assistant Sports Performance Coach is to support the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance in the development of high-performance student athletes by providing varsity teams and athletes with year-round coaching and educational programs related to strength, speed, and conditioning.

Core Duties

  • Enhance potential sports performance and decrease potential injury of student-athletes by developing and implementing educational programs regarding:
    • Strength, speed and conditioning programs.
    • Nutrition and supplementation programs.
    • Regeneration programs.
  • Conduct individual and group instruction in strength, speed, and conditioning training activities.
  • Coordinate, implement, and evaluate student-athlete performance testing as part of development of specific educational programs.
  • Consult and assist University sports medicine staff regarding athletic injury prevention, rehabilitation, and nutrition/supplement education.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and orderly environment during all performance training activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with coaches, sports medicine staff, and athletic administration in support of teams and individual student-athletes.
  • Other instructional duties and responsibilities as assigned by Assistant Athletics Director of Sports Performance.
  • May be required to drive student athletes and/or other University personnel to practices, games, or other functions.
  • May assist with hiring, training, and managing student interns based on Sports Performance Department and University policies, procedures, operations and training philosophy.

Education & Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in exercise science or related field.
  • Required: One year’s experience of directly related club or collegiate Division I experience
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in exercise science or related field.
  • Or equivalent education and/or experience.
Certifications & Licenses
  • Required: Valid Drivers License
  • Required: First Aid/ CPR Certified or ability to obtain certification.
  • Required: Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist ( CSCS ) or Strength Conditioning Coach Certified ( SCCC ).
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of injury prevention and basic response protocols, including the ability to provide assistance to injured student-athletes in coordination with sports medicine staff.

Ability to work effectively with various constituencies including students, the general public, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and other members of the UP community.

  • Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn NCAA (or other sport governing body) rules and regulations applicable to athletic fields and grounds..
