Position description

Nature and purpose: The Specialist provides technical expertise in areas such as instrumentation and research equipment, supporting research projects. The role involves staying updated on emerging issues, providing leadership, facilitating teamwork, and collaborating with colleagues. While normally not a Principal Investigator, the Specialist may collaborate with PIs for research proposals and funding.

Major responsibilities and areas of expertise
I. Research in specialized areas (88% effort)
  • Assist in developing AI-driven models, simulations, and decision-making tools for controlled environment agriculture.
  • Support research involving machine learning, cyber-physical systems, and digital twins for indoor farming.
  • Conduct data collection, processing, and analysis for AI-based control systems.
  • Develop and maintain sensor networks, data acquisition systems, and control algorithms.
  • Assist in preparing scientific publications, reports, and grant proposals.
  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, and students to achieve research goals.
II. Professional competence and activity (6% effort)
  • Participate in professional societies, technical groups, and research organizations related to AI and controlled environment agriculture.
  • Review research proposals, journal manuscripts, and publications on AI-driven crop modeling and digital systems.
III. University and public service (6% effort)
  • Maintain collaborations with industry, government, and external stakeholders on AI in controlled environment agriculture.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees, providing expertise on AI applications.
Education and expertise
  • MS degree in Computer Science and Engineering, Data Science, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Experience with machine learning, AI modeling, and cyber-physical systems in agriculture.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages.
  • Experience with sensor integration, data collection, and calibration (LabVIEW preferred).
  • Strong communication skills for research papers and grant proposals.

Basic qualifications (required)
  • MS in Statistics or related field.
