Examples of Duties
- Assist the District Road Supervisor in supervising, instructing, assisting, and inspecting the work of road crews engaged in patching, resurfacing, and maintaining paved and surfaced roads, repairing and constructing culverts and small bridges, and removing obstructions, brush and weeds from right-of-way and shoulders.
- Operate heavy equipment or perform other duties when not supervising crews.
- Inspect County roads and report findings.
- Keep time and equipment records.
- Assist employees' performance evaluations.
- Review timecards for supervisor's signature.
- Conduct inventory of supplies, fuels, materials to be used on projects.
- Respond to complaints from the public.
- Instruct crews in and enforce operating safety practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible road construction and maintenance experience, including one (1) year performing duties comparable to those of Road Maintenance Worker III in Merced County.
- License: Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver’s license.
- Safety: This position is subject to pre‑employment, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, random and return‑to‑duty drug and alcohol testing pursuant to the County of Merced drug and alcohol testing policy.

- Occasionally kneel, bend, twist, squat, climb, balance and crawl.
- Frequent repetitive hand and arm motion.
- Occasional risk of exposure to hazardous materials.
- Normal dexterity, frequent holding, grasping, repetitive motion.
- Frequent exposure to noise.
- Constant use of hand/eye coordination.

Vacation:
10 days the first 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 160 hours), 15 days in the second 5 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 240 hours), and 20 days after 10 years of continuous employment (limited to a maximum of 320 hours).
Sick leave:
0.0625 hours sick leave for each paid regularly scheduled work hour. 16 days (130 hours per year) with unlimited accumulation. Optional annual buy back of a portion of accumulated sick leave hours upon meeting certain criteria.

State Disability Insurance (SDI)
Merced County non‑management employees are enrolled in the State Disability Insurance Program (SDI). Premiums for this insurance are paid by the employee. This insurance is administered solely by the state, who determines eligibility and payments. Benefit amounts are based on the quarter with the highest wages earned within the base period.

Retirement Deferred Compensation
The County offers a 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan. Employees choose their investment funds and can make pre‑tax or post‑tax contributions to the plan up to the maximum allowable.

The retirement plan is a defined benefit plan administered pursuant to the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937 and other provisions of the California Government Code. MCERA members also pay into Social Security.
