Position Summary
Denver Botanic Gardens is currently seeking a Full Time Assistant Retail Store Manager in our Gift Shop Department! Read below to see if the requirements might be a good fit for you:
This role will assist the Retail Store Manager in the daily operations of the Shop at the Gardens and its staff. It is a role that interacts directly with our guests in the Gift Shop, and it also serves as a back up to the Manager. It will work within established budgetary guidelines as well as assisting the Buyer/ Merchandise Manager in buying, displaying, and maintaining the merchandise sold with the goal of assuring the highest quality customer service and guest experience for all DBG visitors and members.
Requirements
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Works with staff and the public daily to ensure a positive experience, resolving issues and providing impeccable customer service.
- Analyzes and manages appropriate annual shop operating budgets, inventory, and financial reports and operate the shop within established revenue, and expense projections.
- Ensures compliance of all DBG and retail store Operating Policies and Procedures.
- Sets, communicates, and ensures compliance with policies for sales, reports, handling of merchandise, customer service, cash handling, returns, and store opening and closing.
- Performs assigned tasks to establish and implement attractive displays that encourage sales. Also assist in identifying timely merchandise markdowns and obsolete merchandise.
- Coordinates with Buyer/Merchandiser and Shipping/Receiving/Inventory Coordinator to price ticket and implement displays.
- Conducts physical inventory and cycle inventory processes as required.
- Creates and maintain a flexible work schedule for the retail store as defined by the Retail Store Manager
- Assists the Retail Store Manager in managing all aspects of Gift Shop operations and staff including but not limited to hiring, training, supervising, scheduling and performance and evaluations.
- Partners with the Store Manager and Gift Shop Buyer/Merchandiser to develop a vision and long-term plan for the profitable growth and development of the retail store.
- Maintains the shop as well as all ancillary areas in a clean, safe and efficient manner.
- Assists with processing all customer and vendor orders timely. Merchandise to be receipted and into the shop within appropriate in timely manner.
- Communicates to Buyer/ Merchandiser customer and sales staff feedback regarding hot and cold items as well as requests for new “trend” merchandise.
- Travels on occasion with Buyer/Merchandiser for buying and merchandising.
- Maintains a current knowledge of the Denver Botanic Gardens Employee Handbook.
- Works with all departments to assure highest quality experience for all DBG visitors within the Retail Store and throughout the Gardens.
- Seeks to be knowledgeable about all DBG horticulture, exhibits, programs, and events to better select merchandise that reflects the experience and brand at the Gardens.
- Regular attendance at the worksite may be required. As with all positions at Denver Botanic Gardens, the incumbent must be in good performance standing to be eligible for remote work. Remote work is at the discretion of management at all times.

Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have strong leadership skills and have experience with team building and successfully motivating and training salespeople in a competitive retail environment.
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Must have proven excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills in dealing with the public.
- Ability to maintain stability under pressure and able to deal well with stressful situations.
- Ability to be flexible and willing to modify plans, when necessary, throughout the day.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Suite products, specifically Word, Excel and Outlook and Teams.
- Ability to work overtime as necessary.
- Must be a positive representative of the Gardens both internally and externally at all times.
- Must work with respect and cooperation at all times with fellow employees and the public.
- Must be committed to working safely at all times.
Experience/Education
- High school diploma / GED and/or combination of education and equivalent experience is required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a retail role with at least 3 of those years in a leadership role.
- Position requires a valid driver’s license.
Travel
Up to 10% travel required. Requires the ability to travel to remote locations (or other Garden locations) where environment may vary significantly.
