Job summary

NCDOT is seeking an Engineer I (NS) in the Division State Highway Administrator's Office. This entry-level role focuses on administering highway construction contracts and applying engineering principles to field and office tasks.

Qualified applicants will hold a Bachelor’s degree in engineering or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with the ability to learn highway methods and to interpret plans, drawings, and specifications. Some positions may require odd hours.

Description of Work

Please note that all positions close at 12:00 AM on the posted closing date. You must apply by 11:59 PM prior to the posted closing date. Position serves as an entry level Engineer in the Beryl Road Resident Engineer’s Office. Position will assist with administering highway construction contracts for all types of construction projects. Applicants should have knowledge of the principles and practices of Engineering with the ability to learn highway construction methods, techniques, standards and specifications, and operating of field and office engineering instruments. This position leads and coordinates reviews of technical plans and drawings. This position may be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes.

  • Ability to plan, organize, and schedule daily tasks.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and the willingness to work collaboratively towards group decisions.
  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively with co-workers, departmental personnel, contractors, developers, local and state officials, and the public.
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate project assignments.
  • Ability to interpret plans, provisions, specifications, policies, procedures and regulations and apply this information in reviewing construction drawings.
  • Selected applicant must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle.
  • Safety toe shoes are required.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC16 / $57,983 - $101,470

Management prefers applicants with the following
  • Experience using computers or electronics tablets
  • Knowledge and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and organized documents and reports addressing basic engineering concepts and facts
Minimum Education and Experience

Necessary Special Qualification

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
